It's one of the best films in the entire collection. It's about an aging man trying to hold onto the past while gradually being overtaken by the trends of time. The one constant in his life is his undying love of music. The film moves slowly, like time itself. By including extended music and dance sequences, Satyajit Ray allows us to not only understand the main character's passion for music, but to actually experience it ourselves.

There's also tons of animals that die during filming (accidentally) too. The cat(s) from Milo and Otis drowned on set.

Men Behind the Sun had live rats set on fire (and probably a cat eaten alive although they denied this one was real)

Pink Flamingoes has a chicken killed

The Rules of the Game has rabbits getting shot

The Serpent's Egg they killed a horse

etc
I forgot to mention Blood of the Beasts, the documentary about the slaughterhouses of Paris that appears as a supplement on the Criterion DVD of Eyes Without A Face. No connection to the main movie, other than the fact that Georges Franju directed both. I made it a few minutes into Blood of the Beasts, then stopped, because I did not want to be swayed from eating meat in the future.

Eyes Without A Face is a Criterion that is in serious need of a Blu-ray, though. It's a beautifully-filmed masterwork of horror that begs for high definition.

So good it has to be seen, no recommendation or large explanation will give you the sense it produces while watching it. It is one of those films that are simple on the surface but throughly layered and complex with each further viewing (Like a Bunuel film, if you have seen some of his). Can't wait for the Ray release Criterion is planning this year (Not the Apu Trilogy but another one they will release).

Please tell me you did not just call Bill Murray awful. PLEASE tell me I read that wrong.

That film was definitely a hard one to swallow, but I finished it.

The film was alright, in my opinion. I did like how it left it open for interpretations, though.

It's kind of like The White Ribbon. While artistic merit is cool and all, I still think a film should have a story and a purpose. Otherwise it's like watching that annoying drunk guy at a party who rambles on to no point.

I so badly want to see this. I haven't found it on any Canadian VOD provider.

8 1/2 is quite awesome.

Fair warning, though...

I found 8 1/2 and Last Year at Marienbad to be similar in a few ways, because they are both films that I like to pause ever so often just to drink in the beauty of a particular still frame. 8 1/2 is not quite as impenetrable, but it's certainly open to a few interpretations. I wrote a big "review" of sorts here a couple weeks back when I revisited it.

The problem is not Wes Anderson. The problem is your sense of humor, it doesn't exist.

My relationship with Wes Anderson's work is weird. I think Moonrise Kingdom and The Royal Tenenbaums are endlessly rewatchable, Mr. Fox, Rushmore, and Bottle Rocket are good fun, while I hope to never have to sit through Darjeeling or The Life Aquatic again.

8.5 is sort of getting on my nerves with the talking out of sync with the lip motions.

I am an admitted big fan of Wes Anderson's and I just love The Darjeeling Limited. I'm a sucker for anything having to do with India as well, so this one just speaks to me, I guess.

Now I, on the other hand, absolutely love MOONRISE KINGDOM, and rather like DARJEELING LIMITED, which is my second-favorite Anderson film. MR. FOX is okay but seemed a bit disappointing. The rest I find to be moderately interesting from a stylistic point of view but the characters and plots are too often annoying to be appealing.

Welcome to Italian cinema. They typically never recorded live sound, so everything was dubbed later. I thought the same thing the first time I watched the Leone westerns, but I came to enjoy it as kind of a stylistic quirk.

Yeah---I was about to say: if that bothers you, you either stop caring about it or have to ignore a few decade's worth of great Italian films.
