I think I'm going to start it out with Revanche, as it seems to be creating quite a buzz around here. Then I'll probably move onto El Norte because I haven't seen that before, either...

Quite an awesome week of Criterions ahead! I think I'm getting addicted...
WOW ...have a great time!! Criterion is a great addiction to have!

I'd like to put my two cents in about some of the films being discussed here. I loved Seventh Seal...I like Ingmar Bergman alot actually. I haven't seen Revanche yet or Hunger but looking forward to seeing them.

I hated Chasing Amy Haha. I don't do well with modern chick flicks and I'm a chick! LOL :P. The kinds of films I enjoy collecting the most are film noir and the one director I own the most criterion's of is Jean-Pierre Melville - so that shows what kind of films I enjoy :P
I'll be watching The Seventh Seal on Saturday. Looking forward to that one.

Just buy what you want...... the resale value on Criterion DVDs is pretty high.... and you can actually break even if you load up at the big B&N sales etc...... and then re-sell on Ebay if the Blu-ray comes out.

Well... I figured since it was going OOP, it'll probably hold it's value and be a nice trading piece later on. Even if the Studio Canal Collection releases it in Region A, it's still going to be valuable to another late-to-the-party Criterion Collector, such as myself. I only just got into Blu-ray a couple months ago, and I am now playing catch-up on the Criterions.

I paid almost $50 recently for The Third Man, and others in this thread have claimed paying upwards of $60+. Before Pierrot Le Fou goes OOP, I figured since it's still available on the Criterion website for $26.95 -- I'd order two: one for me and one to sit on.

Ahh I see..... People did the same thing with The Third Man, and I thought they were silly...... now they have cash in their pockets, and I have my foot in my mouth

I never thought of it this way. Smart. Don't need 2 of you throwing out the income on movies. Would have a large collection, but broke.

Sabzi_Nic, what's your fav Melville? Not my fav but I always think "Un Flic" is so underappreciated.

Sure, it's just that they didn't. I am the same way with "Dillinger is Dead" which had a "restored high-definition digital transfer" and a Janus run, which in past cases and futures cases (Pierrot le Fou and Vivre sa vie) both had Blu-rays. So I don't know how they pick, even when they have a HD transfer right in their hands.

Hi, can anyone tell me which of the Criterion BDs come in plastic packaging? (You know, without needing to get replacement cases.)

I have The Third Man and Pierrot le fou, both of which have plastic cases.

Thanks!

I've been using that seller also and so far I'm very pleased. Only Monsters and Madmen box set's outer sleeve was ripped up and I just contacted criterion and they sent a replacement free of charge. So far I'm very pleased with it and very grateful you shared your insider tip.

So it's worth blindbuying Criterions because I can sell it back for a good price? I really want to see Revanache

Almost watched Revanche tonight but opted for Branded to Kill instead. It was quite the unexpected treat. Will definitely be checking out the other films by that director

Hi Thor...hmm...I wonder if the other DVD booklets would cost anything. I know for Blu-ray they charge around $5 per item.

Jacobserver, you may want to give Criterion a try...esp. with Band of Outsiders for the insert. If they hook you up, I'll try with the one I didn't get an insert with.

If you bought it today and resold it, there are people who are oblivious to the sales and will bid up the yin yang for them.

I don't mean to sound like a greedy ass but say if I hated it it, I could sell it off 30 dollars and make a little income right?

Maybe, you certainly wouldn't lose too much on the resale. But I'd be surprised if you didn't like it. I finally had time to watch Revanche last night and it was incredible, can't recommend it highly enough. And BTW, my wife loved it as well

In that case, I would wait until the B&N or Amazon sales and get the Blu-ray for $17-19 if your concerned. But you won't make money off something used unless it was oop..."The Third Man" or maybe even "pierrot le fou".

after Third Man BD was OOP, there was no other alternative to buy the movie on hi-def unless you bought the higher price copies.

w/pierrot le fou it'll be just a bit different. if you can try to get rid of it sometime between OOP period of time and when Studio Canal comes out w/theirs at the highest price that'll probably be your peak. i think that when SC comes out, the OOP price will come down quite a bit cause now people have somewhere to get it from. same w/3rd man.

You may be right, but I rather have the Criterion over Studio Canal .
