They're unlikable, but they are so very real.

The only think I would knock is the slowness. Still a great film otherwise. I plan on picking up once I satisfy my other Criterion cravings.

Done, $19.06 USD after conversion. They will probably release in the next round of Criterion's now that I've ordered the German version!

I would say it can be slow, it's not the type of film you grow to like instantly.

It gets better on re-watch though. Scenes that felt slow the first time end up having added meaning on re-watch when you know where the film ends up going.

I would agree! I'll bet it's the same transfer as the UK realease. The AQ/PQ is quite good. I think you'll be quite pleased!

I should post my home-made .gif's more often.

Guess the film and get a prize, perhaps?

For some reason that scene was in my head the past couple of days so I decided to make a .gif.

The Kid with a Bike showed up on my doorstep just now.

I mean The Kid with a Bike that I bought.

No, I didn't buy a kid or a bike.

I mean from the flash sale.

Oh, hell, never mind.

Criterion needs to release The Woodsman (starring Kevin Bacon) just for you:P

Having never seen the movie but knowing Bacon's not a paragon of humanity in it, I can't take your post as a vote of confidence in my own humanity. That makes me feel bad.

Only two things can make me feel better.

See you later. Gonna go sharpen my axe and watch Frailty.

PM your address and I'll deliver the boy in person.

I finally watched On the Waterfront yesterday, and it was stunning. I'll be watching Sansho tonight after I santize the place, as Stuart came back this morning, and left in a Wal-Mart coffin. I can now sleep easy, and sit out in my living room, without jumping at every little noise. Still slighly paranoid that he had friends and family though.

Cannot wait for The Blob next week either.

I had a blast watching The Man with No Name Trilogy yesterday (although Eastwood actually does have a name in two of the films). They all look quite stunning on Blu-ray, and it's been a year or so since I had last seen the films via my old DVD versions.
You should read the novel. I read it last year. I loves me my Hammett

So you didn't get crushed by books? We were starting to worry.

Sansho's a great film, I think you'll get something out of it

I suppose I should give On The Waterfront another chance at some point. I first saw it as a required film in my freshman year of college in my Intro to Film class. That one and From Here To Eternity were the only movies I saw that year that I disliked. (Whereas I loved Walkabout, Seventh Seal, A Hard Day's Night, The Philadelphia Story, etc.)

It's been 9 years since I took that class, and maybe now I'll like it. I just remember really disliking Marlon Brando and getting really bored with it just as I was with From Here To Eternity.

Glad I'm not the only potential psychopath posting right now.

Was that your first time seeing Waterfront? I'm one of the few who wasn't wow'd by Brando when I first saw this a few years ago. Or the second time last year. Time to re-evaluate (again).

No, I was playing a female, far more psychotic, version of Nathan Lane's character in Mouse Hunt. It wasn't books, it was rodents. First time in 3 years I've had a rodent problem. The company that took over the building in July has done nothing right since they took over, PaP still isn't working, they don't do proper snow removal, and now meeses. Supposedly an exterminator is coming in, but I doubt it. He hasn't shown up yet, and it's been a week. The building super ran out of traps and never set any in my apt like they promised, and I had to go buy my own. I've also been working overtime playing with SharePoint, as we're switching to it at work. That's also a big barrelful of laughs. I did manage to read about 13 1/4 books since posting today though.

I was impressed by the transfer. It's my second time watching it since 2011. Karl Malden is awesome as usual. that man is criminally underrated. Brando doesn't do much for me either.

I just finished The Great Dictator.

I've said it once and I'll say it again - Charles Chaplin is a genius. He changed the way movies were made and his legacy continues to live on.

While I've only seen The Gold Rush and Modern Times, I would rank The Great Dictator as my favorite of the three Chaplin Criterions. I'm really excited to see Monsieur Verdoux (even though I have it on my DVR right now). I also have The Circus and Limelight recorded so I'll have to check those out sometime soon.

The speech at the end of the film was brilliantly written, in my opinion. It's too bad that we can't have the ideal world that was spoken about.

Love Chaplin, but I'm more of a Buster Keaton kind of guy, sometimes the saccharine is too thick.
