[quoteDrbikeshorts;7233163]Actually, I think that's true. I was just quoting Wikipedia, because it's been awhile since I read either "The Glass Key" or "Red Harvest".
It seems there's confusion over which book Yojimbo was based on. Kurosawa says "The Glass Key".
I say: watch Yojimbo, A Fistful of Dollars, and Miller's Crossing, and read "The Glass Key" and "Red Harvest" and as many of Hammett's other novels as possible.[/quote]

This. Don't forget The Thin Man.

Also, wasn't there a Bruce Willis movie based off of Hammett/Kurosawa?

As an aside, I didn't have a rat, just a mouse, and hhopefully it was only a single mouse. I'm not upset at the mouse exactly, although Stuart is now dead at my hand, but it's more like I'm still pissed off at the rental agency, who are letting the building, and every other building they took over, go to pot.

I should get to Sansho tonight. Now that I've bleached the place, and found more food ripped open by the late little bastard.

Great films I've seen many times (especially) the Wilder. I loves me some noir.

I'll see how Mildred is read-wise before tackling other, but glad to hear an endorsement.

On a separate rat-oriented note, I recently started the 1990 BBC version of House of Cards and was amused to see SEVERAL strategically placed shots of a rat scurrying across a sill with the House of Parliament prominently in the background. As the sage film critic Ralph Wiggum assessed of the Departed: "the rat stands for obviousness!"

And looking at the StudioCanal Collection website, there are some others that have been added to the Studio Canal Collection (Le Cercle Rouge and Le Quai des Brumes/Port of Shadows are former Criterions):

Le Cercle Rouge
Delicatessen
The Graduate
The Pianist
Le Quai des Brumes
The Trial

Also, apparently the "Studio Canal collection" is just a special category of the blu rays available from Studio Canal which has its own separate website here--the site doesn't seem to have a list of all their blu rays (this page says their catalog of films includes several thousand, but probably most of them aren't on blu), but they do have The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie which is another former Criterion (odd that Studio Canal didn't include it in their 'collection' but did include Bunuel's later film That Obscure Object of Desire).

Last Man Standing is a rather hilarious take on Yojimbo. I love how Willis seems to live inside a video game with an Unlimited Ammo cheat. He frequently squeezes 30 or more shots out of his twin Colts without reloading, in spite of their 7-round capacity. Definitely the low man on the totem pole when it comes to versions of this story, but still worth the watch, if only as a curio.

I enjoyed Cain, I tend to read a lot of novels that were adapted into film and TV. I read The Magnificent Ambersons about a week and a half should, and unfortunately wasn't a fan. I'm about halfway through the Haunting of Hill House right now, and will begin The Member of the Wedding next. Why those two? Julie Harris was the star in both film adaptations!

Not in awhile, but I plan on watching it to see if he makes George Amberson any less of an *******.

Criterion should find the missing reel and release the full restored version. No big deal right?

I have it on good authority that Mulvaney himself has successfully built a time machine specifically to go back and stop Robert Wise from executing the instruction to chop up the movie. My trusted source says the only hang up is that Warner refuses to cede rights for Criterion to release the rescued print. Of course, this was before Badlands, so who knows...

Reminds me... Shane Carruth's utterly mind-bending time travel film, Primer (with no less than nine timelines in it), would make a nice addition to the collection. The DVD is a solid edition, but at this time is available only through his site, I believe. With his second self-produced film hitting festival circuits I'd love to think it could happen. In this timeline.

Au Revoir Les Enfants (Goodbye, Children) lives up to its title so well in its portrayal of a tragic end to childhood innocence. Without giving too much away, try to imagine living the rest of your life in guilt over a split-second incident like the one that determined the course of events in the film. Wow...

I'm thankful that my own childhood did not have such a horrible turning point.
(I do, however, wish that my piano teacher had looked like Irene Jacob.)
I agree. One little thing can change your entire life.

Also, Irene Jacob is an asset to any film. She...has a great personality!

I've also heard rumors of the full eight hour cut of Greed. I've only seen the heavily truncated 4hour cut, so that should be nice...On a serious note, what happened to Greed is one of the gravest sins committed against cinema. It's one of the greatest films I've ever seen.

I'm eager to see Carruth's next film, Upstream Color. Primer is an ingeniously mind bending film. I picked up the DVD for $2 at Blockbuster last September.

I'd love to see any cut of Greed, even the four hour. I think I've seen clips here and there in some docs... and in Sunset Blvd. if memory serves instead of fails. It sounds as unlikely as finding Ambersons, but who would have thought such a complete version of Metropolis would exist today, not to mention Rules of the Game and La Grande Illusion, which were endangered. Hope springs eternal.

I'm keeping my eye out for Upstream Color, too. I've been good about remaining ignorant of the film itself. All I know is Rian Johnson has seen it and is very enthusiastic. I genuinely do believe Primer deserves the benefits that'd come from the wider exposure that comes with that C logo/spine number "bump."

No shot at the full 9-hour cut of Greed; the cut film was burned. As sliced as the truncated theatrical cut is, I prefer it to the restored TCM 4-hour cut: while it is admirable in its aim to re-appropriate the lost footage it comes at the expense of flow and watchability. (I think it pretty hilarious, though, that von Stroheim thought he could get away with a film that long anyway, even if he wanted it shown over two days).

[The footage in Sunset Boulevard is from Queen Kelly, a film of von Stroheim's which starred Gloria Swanson. Another of his pictures that was savagely cut by studios, it wasn't even completed]

I'm definitely looking forward to Upstream Color as well.

What if Shane Carruth solves the riddle of time travel and thus goes back in time to save both Greed and Magnificent Ambersons. Also, maybe if Owl contacts him, with enough persuasion, they'll team up to stop Pay it Forward from happening.

True, Stroheim's ambition is the definition of hubris. Still, it was in service of pushing the medium and in its way was an acknowledgement that film had untapped potential.

One of my favorite things about MoC's Touch of Evil and CC's Brazil is the inclusion of multiple cuts, and what blew me away about CC's Night of the Hunter (besides the film itself) is the insanely extensive collection of outtakes, alternate takes, etc. Among other things it makes me think that a streamlined cut of the film would be an excellent exercise, with another disc devoted to the longer cut and/or excised material.

I sensed I was wrong. Nevertheless, being that this is the Internet and having observed many times on this site (though not really in this thread), I will let you have your facts and I'll stand by mine even though it incidentally makes me look like a small-minded buffoon.

Coincidentally I stumbled over the soundtrack on iTunes just now. Sampled it. Kind'a ambient.

Forget the quagmire of accidentally stepping on a prehistoric insect, meeting your own grandparents or whether to kill baby Adolf, imagine how many film atrocities could be prevented. I have insufficient imagination to conceive of the wrongs we could right. Hm. Time traveling film nerds... could be a TV show.

Watching Claudia Cardinale in Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West last night made me want to go back to my Blu-ray of Fellini's 8 1/2.

Also, the Criterion Blu-ray of The Leopard will be in my collection eventually. Probably during one of the 50% off sales, because it's a pricey package.

Dude, don't give away the goods! Gotta work on a treatment to pitch to Hulu (House of Cards counter-programming) and IFC (the next AMC?)
