Is it a brand-spanking new Criterion restoration?

I noticed Playtime is $88 on BN.com right now.

I read the premise of it and it intrigues me. Would certainly buy it.

If I recall correctly, Criterion plans on releasing all of the Tati films on Blu-ray or a good chunk, since they renewed the rights or something.

One could speculate that they will re-release Playtime, but nothing is set in stone. I would PROBABLY buy the version that's out now before it goes OOP and costs a fortune.

See this comment from last month, apparently it's coming back, hopefully along with the first two in the Monsieur Hulot "trilogy":

Well it already costs about $114 brand new. Around $90 on Amazon from 3rd Party sellers.

Guess I could always just wait.

There's room for both types.

My twin towers are Louise Brooks and Christina Lindberg and those are 2 quite similar but different types.

Paying full price for a film of the caliber of Letter Never Sent would be money well spent. Paying what is 50% off, absolutely yes.

Hopefully they actually use a 70mm source this time, instead of a 35mm reduction.

All bold titles are OOP and unlikely unless the winds change with the exception of BRD which is out of print, but is supposed to be coming back.

I will say that I truly hope they keep the design of the set as I think it's one of the best looking covers (the box particularly) in the collection.

It's become the upgrade I'm most excited for...but month after month I grow increasingly doubtful it will happen, after it doesn't...I hope to be surprised with an announcement.

I wouldn't know, but of those the ones I most want to see on Blu-ray from Criterion would be DEAD RINGERS, PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK, L'AVVENTURA, the Von Sternberg silents, and the rest of the Ingmar Bergman films (not necessarily in that order). ACE IN THE HOLE, THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD, a good sharp version of SPARTACUS, and a few other titles would be nice, too. There are already decent Region-B Blu-ray releases of some of these films, and the BFI Blu-rays of Cassavetes' SHADOWS and FACES are both region-free.

Dead Ringers has been OOP for a while. The guy above forgot to bold it.

Yes! You should hit that like the fist of an angry god.

Letter Never Sent was my favorite Criterion release of 2012, and it was one of the "priority one" titles for me to upgrade to Blu-ray when I bought my player. I never get tired of this movie, and it's an outstanding, rugged adventure.

The mention of Letter Never Sent got me thinking about another outstanding "rugged adventure" Criterion title...

Cornel Wilde's The Naked Prey

This is one of the best Criterion DVDs out there, and I'd love to see an upgrade to Blu-ray so that the film's wilderness settings can be seen in high definition. The movie takes place in Africa, but it is loosely based John Colter's run from the Blackfoot Indians in 1809 Wyoming. There are some brutal scenes in The Naked Prey (especially one unfortunate sequence where someone is covered with clay), so it's not for the squeamish. Great great movie, though!

Criterion should also release Cornel Wilde's Beach Red and No Blade of Grass, methinks.

So even if a DVD is OOP, Criterion doesn't have the rights to it anymore?
