Wow...that's a gash (I've never had that problem) but I'm guessing easily corrected by contacting Mulvaney. Thor, did you contact Mulvaney when you got your replacement or another contact at Criterion?

I have been going crazy this week with the seller as well... I usually compare with bn.com and see how much would it cost if it was 50% off and thus try to keep my bids low.

But man...the ones I have been trying to go after were some of those box sets. I don't really see Criterion fans talking about the Robeson box set, so when he/she put like 2-3 of those sets up...I was hoping to score them for under $30...but got outbidded in the last second.

But managed to pick up many titles specifically the 2-disc and 3-disc releases under the 50% off mark...so most of them between $11.99-$15.

Was happy to finally get "The Thief of Bagdad", "A Canterbury Tale", "If..." and "Threepenny Opera" cheap. I am happy that I got "La Strada", "The Spy Who Came In From the Cold" and "Twenty Four Eyes" pretty cheap.

But man..."Europa" and "Exterminating Angel" are pain to bid on.

Again, had no problem but one (and it was a missing insert but I'll try Criterion to see how that works out in getting a replacement insert)...ordered way over a hundred titles from this seller in the last few months and it's a great way to get Criterion releases that you missed and don't want to pay a lot for.

Great price!!! I've never seen "The Spy Who Came In From the Cold" bought for that low...but he had a good number of them this week. I ended up getting it for $14. I tried to get the "La Haine" and "Blast of Silence" but I played my bids to conservatively. Great job on scoring the "Hiroshima Mon Amour" esp. "Scenes from a Marriage" for that price.

Man...he had some Eisenstein sets up and I paid over $30 during the BN 50% off sale, so I was surprised people got them at under $17.

Just because it was directed by American director doesn't it stop it from being foriegn to me. It's about a honorary story for another country with a majority of non American actors and 98 percent of it was in Japanese. I consider it more foriegn than a hollywood movie just like Che.

I wanted his copy of Human Condition but it went for $42 which is still a good price but I would love to pick it up for $35!

I ended up talking to Mulvaney. He was really nice about it. Luckily thus far Monsters and Madmen was the only one I've gotten from the seller that was messed up beyond repair (so far).
thus far I've gotten from the seller:

White Dog - near perfect condition
Raymond Bernard eclipse set - near perfect condition
Monsters and Madmen - near perfect except ripped outer sleeve
Last Days of Disco - near perfect condition
The Ice Storm - On it's way
Kicking and Screaming - On it's way (supposedly brand new)

I need more money so I can try to win Jeanne Dielman, I always get outbid at the last second.

Hi there,

Criterion lover from England here, first post so hello all.

I currently have a Samsung BD-P1400 for my Criterion needs (use a PS3 for my english Blu's) but have started to find it very sluggish so looking for a new region A player.

What do you guys use and do you find they are all particularly slow.

I'm definitely thinking a Sony, was going to have a go at the n460 but in the UK doubt it would be much use seeing as we cant use Netflix and the like anyhow.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

the n460 is pretty fast....... if you got it, would you be able to get a "streaming only" membership from Netflix where you are???? I know you can't get discs from them in the mail/post, but they do offer streaming only plans.......just not sure if it is U.S. only.

I use a PS3 for Blu-rays and netflix, but have had 3 of them break (one was now out of warranty) so I don't recommend them for strictly movies (which is all I used them for up until 3 months ago) but I do recommend the sony players....... I would like an Oppo though

welcome aboard......

"Mad Detective" is a region-free MOC but there is also region-free Hong Kong blu-ray release from Mei-Ah.

"Soul Power" is region-free from MOC, but now there's also the region-free Sony release.

So, the simple answer is we can't be too sure.

An American director doesn't stop it, yes, but Letters from Iwo Jima is a studio film (Warner Bros), so it's American/Hollywood. Che I can slide due to it being financed by other countries (Spain's Telecinco and France's Wild Bunch).

There are foreign films, and then there are films about foreign subject matter. Letters from Iwo Jima falls in the latter category, just as a film like Apocalypto would... even though the dialogue is entirely non-English. I think CassavetesGodard has also made a good point when referring to the studios involved in the production of the film.

With that said, I understand where you're coming from; sometimes I let the film-snob get the better of me.

I'd say the term foreign film relates to where the movie comes from, not where it was set.
Can you say 2001: A Space Odyssey is foreign? Extraterrestrial? Out of this world?

Call your local Barnes & Noble you can't check for it online but a lot of local stores still have it stocked in their Blu ray section.

I was lucky enough to get a copy of The Third Man at my local Fry's 2 months after it was OOP. You might wanna check them (if you have one close).

I didn't want that to happen with Pierrot so I ordered from Amazon as soon as news of it becoming OOP was posted here.

You might want to check on there again, he/she just added another large load of Criterions.

I noticed people really bidding crazy for "Elevator to the Gallows", did that go oop or something?

Got my second batch of replacement cases in today.
Ordered on the 9th.
Not bad.

So as of now, I'm 100% caught up with all current releases and cases.

It's a very fair point. It's still apart of Hollywood and I look back at my statement and technically it is Hollywood but when it comes down to it, I think watching movies (which I should have said earlier) in a different language is quite fun. And it's something that wouldn't appeal to most Americans. Inglourious is probably the first movie accepted by a wide mainstream audience that's mostly in a different language.

According to this post: it says they're losing the rights at the end of March. So they should be filling orders for another month or so.
