I think Paris, Texas is probably in my TOP5 favorite films of all time. So I had very high hopes for Wings of Desire. I gave it 3 chances but I fell asleep every single time. I eventually sold it but I think I should give it another go sometime in the near future.

I wonder why Best Buy doesn't put Criterions in the front "new release" stand like they do for other new releases that week.

I think they use planograms and generally feature releases that studios pay for the ad space. I think the only ones they ever did advertisements for were Curious Case of B. B. and back in the DVD days I recall The Last Emperor which I found surprising at the time.

but it probably depends on available space and per each store if someone puts the release there.

The titles are not mainstream enough, theyd rather fill those slots with endless copies of Argo, Looper, etc..

My preferences are strong for Paris, Texas, but I am a big fan of Wings of Desire as well. I watched my old DVD copy several times, but sold it in anticipation of the Blu-ray, which I found for 40% off last week and pulled the trigger, so I'll probably watch it soon. (Maybe tonight, in fact.)

I love the footage of Berlin, with its mixture of settings both bleak and beautiful. Very cool, considering the historical context of the film being shot shortly before the collapse of the Berlin Wall.

Massive purchase day for me...

I just pre-ordered Badlands from Amazon. As much as I prefer to buy Criterions in person from Barnes & Noble, I figured I'd give Amazon a shot for their cheaper price in hopes that the disc will arrive in good condition.
I'm going to be busy next week with a few things and may not be able to watch the movie the night of release as I did with The Blob last night, and I revisited my old Warner DVD of Badlands only four months back, so there's no hurry.

Also...

After a few days of indecision, and despite my trash talk about Twilight Time here on the thread yesterday, I decided to pull the trigger on The Big Heat and Rapture today.

I wonder if I'm the very last person to purchase a copy of The Big Heat. Probably not, but it seems to be a popular title.

I'm really intrigued by Swamp Water, but that will have to wait for another day.

I think they have a lot of copies left. I don't think it's as widely sought after as other titles, despite being directed by a popular filmmaker.

Also, weren't we just talking about The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly the other day? Fun little thing about the theme is that Green Day has been using it as the intro for their concerts lately.

Tsk tsk.

Haven't seen the sequel myself (and I've watched WoD several times), but why would you care if you didn't like the first one?

I would be happy if they even stocked more than a dozen titles around here...

We sure were. I enjoyed a lazy Sunday two weekends ago by watching The Man with No Name Trilogy on Blu-ray. (Clint Eastwood actually does have a name in For a Few Dollars More and in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, but I still have to give MGM props for a catchy trilogy title.)

The Good, the Bad and The Ugly is one of my absolute favorites, and I've even seen it on the big screen before.

The music is so ubiquitous these days, but it would fit in quite well for the intro to a Green Day show. I've somehow never seen Green Day in concert before, despite seeing several of their contemporaries back in the day (early 1990s) when I was in college. I remember when they were just playing in tiny venues at the time.

I've never seen Faraway, So Close, but the movie does star Nastassja Kinski, and it also features the outstanding U2 song that the band recorded for the film. I'm sure that I'd dig it.

I still have my "The Man WIth No Name Trilogy" to watch. I've heard fantastic things, and judging by the ratings, I can see that all of it seems to be deserved.

Green Day has been my favorite band for almost all of my life and I'm pumped to see them a couple of times in April.

Regarding the theme song used in their show, here's a video of it if you want to watch. This was their first show back since Billie Joe Armstrong got out of rehab for alcohol and substance abuse.

You mean to tell me Badlands or The Blob wouldn't be more mainstream than Sushi Girl or Hit and Run?

People over 25 shop at Best Buy too! (Even though I'm only 22)

They had Sushi Girl on the side of the new release rack and I'd never even heard of the movie until release day.

I'm pretty sure Sushi Girl is a Best Buy exclusive, though.

Also, the price of the Criterions may deter people from purchasing them. Therefore, Best Buy has a better chance at making a profit of putting certain films in the racks, compared to others.

Went ahead and did Amazon preorder for Naked Lunch and Repo Man. April needs to hurry up and get here.

Edit: Could someone tell me about Col. Blimp and let me know if I should consider getting that one?

This.

Wings of Desire was one of the most anticipated Criterion films I ever bought. It was a blind buy for me. Fortunately I loved it. I'm not sure, but maybe *moody* is a good word to describe it. (?) Hmmm.

Shortly after, I went for another Wim Wenders film (Paris, Texas ... another blind buy) and probably enjoyed that one even more. Sort of the same kind of *moody* type of film, but in an entirely different way. Did that make sense?

Maybe this is a good place to thank the many people in this forum for opening my eyes to films that I most likely would never have bought (or even known about) without reading the back and forth discussions in here ... which drew my interest to look into these films further and decide for myself whether I wanted to purchase them or not. I'm happy with all I've bought so far. Anxious for many more!

I think Best Buy may have had the Blu-DVD combo exclusive like Cosmopolis, but I saw Sushi Girl at Movie Stop and Wal-Mart.

Wenders is a very lyrical director... in similar ways to Terrence Malick IMO. His films are, in a way. more like poems than straight plot-to-plot narratives. They take the time to see the beauty all around, and let the characters see this beauty, too. Check out Beyond the Clouds, the film he made with Antonioni. There's a shot in that film with characters sitting on swings at a beach, with the wind just blowing sand across the surface... it has nothing to do with plot, but it's a beautiful moment.

All this talk of Wenders makes me want The American Friend and Million Dollar Hotel on blu.

That's a nice way to look at it.

Just as I mentioned in my previous post ... here you go with more films to check out which I've never heard of. Thanks once again.
