For me the hardest wait is for a decent sale. Hopefully Amazon or Deepdiscount have one before the summer.

Believe me, if I could wave a wand and pick one us to be right...

[edit: is it just me or is that a horribly constructed sentence?]

Maybe Raimi's Oz not only sucked your soul but your ability to construct proper sentences

I just finished Island Of Lost Souls. It was a pretty decent flick and very advanced for its time. We've seen the whole idea of "Playing God" in recent times, but this is one of the first examples of it in film, I believe.

Honestly, I really enjoyed the central message of the film. Are individuals who resort to violence and blood shed truly men? I understand that the creatures were the ones proposing this question, but it can be used in everyday conversation.

It would then justify the wait.

Here are my picks for future box releases.

Antonioni/Monica Vitti trilogy
Dekalog
Bergman's God Trilogy (not coined by him, by the way)
BRD trilogy
David Lean/Dickens set

Those are excellent picks...wasn't there a Wenders set too?

Yeah I'd take that. Heck, if that and the basically-confirmed Wild Strawberries were all that were released, that'd be fine by me.

Good thing there would be more either way!

Though they haven't been taking the lead on drops and sales as readily as they've done in the recent past, I think we can count on Amazon to drop a few Criterions <$20 like they've done around this time the past few years.

I don't know about DD: their nominal Criterion 'sales' aren't usu worth writing home about outside of a handful of titles, though they give dollar-off coupons infrequently. I just used one they sent me in an email a couple weeks ago to nab The Quiet Man (just in time for St. Paddy's, yay).

I know it was a couple of years ago but, whatever became of the rumor that they were releasing Twin Peaks/Fire Walk With Me?

I think last year's was April-ish on Amazon...it sounds about right.

Wim Wender set would be excellent. A lot of his German films I have not seen. Being that Paris Texas and Wings of Desire are film classics in my opinion, it would be great to have a box set of his early German films.

There is a Australian 13 box set DVD.

I would not hesitate to buy a Wender's blu ray box set of his early German films.

I don't remember well, but I think there was a rumored set...

Anyway, I really should give Wings of Desire another chance... I'm probably the only person who thinks Paris, Texas is the greatest film ever and had Wings of Desire do nothing for me at all. Especially since I get the feeling more people celebrate Wings. I just didn't feel anything from it.

Last summer I grabbed about 15 Criterions at DeepDiscount for an average of 17.50 each.

Once or twice a year DD has a pretty good Kino/Synapse/Blue Undergroud/Etc sale but I can't remember the last time I ordered a Criterion from them.

I am more emotionally attached to Paris, Texas because I know those areas in Texas seen in the movie. If I had to recommend a Wenders film to a friend, it would be Paris, Texas

I've seen Wings twice and it still doesn't do it for me. Too long, too normal in the second half, tries to be great poetry but just bores me about midway to the end. I like some of it very much, just not enough to recommend. Same with the sequel..both could use a good edit.

I love Paris, Texas, though!

Yup. I hate to admit that Wings did bore me at times. I anticipated a strong reaction based on what I've read, and I got nothing out of it the one and only time I watched it so far. With Paris, Texas, on the other hand, I can't think of a more perfect film. (Just re-watched it last night with a relative and I'm still amazed at how impressed and affected I am every single time...if anything, it increases each time).

Ahhhhh.... Discussion of Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire.

I had the opposite initial reaction of most people.

I bought the Criterion DVDs of Wings of Desire and Paris, Texas at the same time shortly after they were released, because I got a great sale price. I had been wanting to see Wings of Desire for a long time (being the big U2 dork that I am, and knowing that their video was associated with Wim Wenders). I loved it. When I watched Paris, Texas the following night, I liked it a lot, but thought that it paled in comparison to Wings of Desire.

Upon subsequent viewings, however, my preferences changed. Paris, Texas is now my favorite of the two by a good ways.

These are both essential Criterions, though.

One of the great performances of a few years back was Wings star Bruno Ganz as Hitler in Downfall. Absolutely riveting film about the last days of the Third Reich.
