Is there any possibility of a Blu-ray version of Fassbinder's "Berlin Alexanderplatz"?

I blind bought The Game. I figured this is not a bad price for a Criterion release and now I wish I took part in their 50% off sale so I could have gotten some of their other movies.

I wouldn't rule it out...but I doubt it. It's from German TV and I think it looks as good as it can on DVD. I don't see CC doing a blu-ray upgrade.

A Japanese blu-ray is being released by the end of this month

http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00ATZX3NW

What does that say for a US release? Possible, but be prepared to pay big bucks for it, as the Japanese version is already $250. And, who knows how good the transfer is/will be.

I very much doubt it'll happen. For starters, the master used for the DVD was a 2K scan of the 16mm elements. That's not to say there won't be a noticeable improvement at 1080p, but it's not going to blow anyones socks off.

How could Criterion possibly convince enough people to spend ANOTHER $80 on a release they already have, for a small upgrade, to make it worth their while? Right now Criterion are upgrading around 15-20 titles per year. Berlin Alexanderplatz would be a complete waste of one of those slots (perhaps multiple slots, since it'd be at least a 4-5 disc release), and Criterion know it.

I suppose they could try to market a BD set to the several hundred million people in the US alone who don't have Berlin Alexanderplatz on DVD.

I'd certainly give it a look.

And the millions outside the US. World on a Wire was cleaned up 2K from 16mm, if I recall correctly, and that looks good.

Went into my local Bestbuy yesterday to pick up Badlands, and their CC in store selection has become pretty none existent...they had 2 copies of Badlands and maybe The Game. They did, however, have about 125 copies of Zero Dark Thirty in DVD and 3 different BD editions.

And a bunch of different editions of The Hobbit that will probably sit still because everyone knows that an Extended Edition is forthcoming.

I was happily impressed, however, to find Badlands sitting right up front on the New Release Table next to the more popular flicks, so that I did not have to go looking for it.

That's pretty cool. The only Criterion I've ever seen in their new release display was Rosemary's Baby and that really surprised me.

Yeah, I noticed that too, but I'm not going to knock The Hobbit since I enjoyed it. I'm not spending a dime on that 'till the box set.

How is that relevant? Surely you know that a set like BA, like most of the Criterion Collection, simply cannot be marketed to that sort of audience. They are not interested.

You, like myself, belong to a tiny proportion of people who follow forums like this one and avoid DVD purchases when a BD release is possible in the near future. Unfortunately, most people just buy what they want and don't worry about things like this. If they want to see BA, they go and buy it on DVD.

Again, what relevance do people outside the U.S. have? The amount of internationals who have an interest in Criterion are small in number, and the ones who are Region A/free capable are a fraction of that number. The market you describe does not exist.

World on a Wire looks great on Blu-ray, as I'm sure Berlin Alexanderplatz would too. But caps show it is a small upgrade from the DVD version.

I am an international Region A capable Criterion fan, I own Berlin Alexanderplatz on DVD, I wouldn't upgrade it to Blu-ray.

Thanks to Amazon's sale, I'm finally going to own Brazil! Legit one of my favorite movies of all time. I even wrote a term paper on it for my Film & Culture class last year.

I suspect you belong to an even tinier proportion than myself - ie those who own BA on DVD. I suspect you're a sliver of a sliver of a sliver and while double-dippers are always welcome my impression - and that's all it is, an impression - is that in this particular case the prospect of DVD owners double-dipping isn't a major concern simply because there probably aren't that many of you to begin with.

Looking forward to hearing where you'd rank it among Malick's other films.
