Top three from the past decade...

Three Colors
Carlos
Chungking Express

Naked, Revanche and (maybe) Following are very close behind.

Which is to take nothing away from Cronos, Certified Copy, White Material, La Haine or Antichrist all of which I really liked too.

So basically it narrowed it down to what? Eleven?

That's very discipined of me, I think.

(oh, and Bernie was a pretty terrible movie overall but Matthew McConaughey was freaking hilarious. it wasn't just that he was funny, he had a really, really, deft touch and an almost pitch-perfect sense of the right tone for that role/film. I was very impressed)

I thought Bernie was delightful. Easily Black's best performance.

I'm one of those that didn't like it. It was ok, though. I think part of that had to do with learning about the real-life man, and how he apparently wasn't nearly as sympathetic as portrayed in the film...how he really did take advantage of plenty of people like that.

Doh, you're right...I went back twenty, didn't I

It really does fly sometimes.

That makes it a lot easier though - Carlos.

OK, but given that a common synonym is "golden hour", it normally refers to a time when the sun is a bit over the horizon and everything (including the sky) has a warm golden light, as in the blu ray screenshot, not the cool bluish light just before sunrise (or just after sunset) that the DVD color timing seems to be trying to replicate.

That's based on Wim Wenders' comment...the colors during that scene on the DVD >>> that's what twilight (early dawn) looks like.
"Twilight" can refer either to the period around sunrise or sunset, see the definition here (and I more commonly see it used for the time after sunset). But maybe you are translating a German term used by Wim Wenders on the commentary?

If they had cut his thirty or so songs down to around ten I might have had an easier time with it. But even then it would have been iffy. As much as I used to like him, he's very much become one of those 'better in small doses' guys.

He kind of reminds me of Dennis Leary that way. I loved The Ref but it was almost too much Dennis Leary. School of Rock was fun overall but it was almost too much Jack Black.

This one you can scratch the almost.

I pick up White Material every time I see it in a store, but I still haven't made the purchase. It seems like it might be right up my alley, but I do not know much about it other than a gut feeling. For some reason, I associate the premise with Walkabout or The Naked Prey, although I'm thinking that it's probably not like those.

I'm watching my Blu-ray of Apocalyse Now tonight, much in part because Badlands made me decide to accelerate it on my viewing list. I'm an hour into Apocalyse Now, and this Blu-ray is downright stunning.

It's very divisive, so maybe only you can tell if you like it. I know many here don't find much of value in it, but I really liked the film.

While I do love both of those films, the upper hand goes to Hunger and The Kid with a Bike for 20xx releases on Criterion. Neither is very far behind though.

I absolutely agree, although Magic Mike still made its way into my top 20 of 2012. Such a pleasant surprise. I should have never doubted Soderbergh.

I'm with you. Great movie, great performance by Jack Black and one of my favorite actors, Matthew McConaughey.

Also, Jack Black had only a handful of songs in that movie, at most. octagon is really exaggerating.

I dunno, I thought Magic Mike was pretty mediocre. Matt McC was easily the best part of the movie, though.

I watched the 1979 version of Apocalyse Now tonight, then scanned through a few random favorite scenes in Apocalypse Now Redux.

In the Criterion topic arena, I just now realized that Aurore Clement, who played Dean Stockwell's wife in Paris, Texas, also played the French colonist woman who spends a night with Martin Sheen. Her scene in Apocalyse Now where she disrobes and walks behind the transparent bed curtains is one of the most erotic movie sequences that I have ever seen, although it is a only a brief scene in an otherwise disturbing masterpiece.

I've seen both versions of Apocalypse Now several times, and my preferences are strong for the 1979 version. That surreal French plantation scene with Aurore Clement in Redux is really something else, though.

I want to see A Man Escaped soon, but I think that I'm going to wait for a nice Barnes and Noble coupon, because that movie should be around in the stores.

I'm going to Best Buy tomorrow to hit the individual stand-alone Blu-ray of the first Jurassic Park movie while it is on sale for a low price. (I don't care for the other two movies, so I've avoided the existing trilogy set.). The new Depeche Mode CD will be mine tomorrow as well.

"Love lifted me."

By the way, we need another Linklater film on BluRay. Texan pride
