I myself ventured to Amazon and saw that Army of Shadows and Le Cercle Rouge Blu-rays are both on sale for less than $25. I was tempted to grab backup copies for these all-time favorites, although I already have DVD backups, but I decided that I did not want to hoard the Blu-rays unnecessarily and rob another Melville fan of the chance to provide a loving home to a deserving movie. |

The fact these are all French films makes me think it could be Studio Canal taking back the rights; that is, if these are licensed from Studio Canal. It has been awhile since I watched the blu-rays, but I seem to recall seeing the Studio Canal title opening on LYAM, and maybe the Melville's too.
Damn, the Melville's are among my favorite Criterions and favorite films. At least I have them already. EDIT: How did a Hungarian flag get on top of my post lol? I must have accidentally clicked on it while hitting the submit button. Last edited by oildude; 03-29-2013 at 05:07 PM. |

Speaking of StudioCanal, has anyone seen their Blu-ray of Pierrot Le Fou? I read that there are some color scheme differences between that version and the Criterion Blu-ray, but that it's an otherwise nice transfer.
I'm happily holding on to my Criterion DVD of Pierrot Le Fou (and The Third Man) for now, but would be interested to read some thoughts. |

Never went long without falling asleep while reading Immanuel Kant's Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics. Anna Karenina, read by Divina Porter for Recorded Books, is very good, too. It's not that she's a bad reader; she's very good. It's a good bedtime story, I guess.

My original amazon order of Army of Shadows showed up on release date with the paper stock on the spine creased and has annoyed me since. So I did pick up new copies today using 20% off Barnes Coupons. (yes online is cheaper) but I wanted the cases to look good. I also bought a back up copy of Le Cercle Rouge (I also own the UK Studio Canal Blu) I know I'm odd. :-)
I believe all these titles going OOP are Studio Canal releases and that makes sense as much as honestly Criterion can sell their product better than S.C. can. IMO. |

It's not. All these titles are Studio Canal titles (after the first batch of Studio Canals went OOP, and it became apparent that the rest would eventually, I went out of my way to seek out and grab all of them at the time, regardless if they were available on Blu or not, so I'd be covered once the rest of them went; I've had to rebuy some as Blu-Rays were released, like Army of Shadows and Le Cercle Rouge, but it's better now than trying later). |

I would strongly suggest that film lovers who do not currently own Last Year at Marienbad on Criterion blu-ray pick it up ASAP. It is one of the big C's better blu-ray editions, not to mention an incredible one-of-a kind work of art.

Studio Canal has a great catalog of films, but they don't seem to release much each year here in the U.S. At least, that is my impression. This could be because Lionsgate is their distributor here, and in my opinion, Lionsgate is the worst at releasing catalog titles of all the major distributors. I have no problem with the quality of their transfers that I have seen, but they don't appear all that interested in their Studio Canal titles or their back catalog.
