I agree completely. Both L'Avventura (which came out one year earlier) and Last Year at Marienbad pushed the medium in new and interesting directions.

Yes, this was the case with Playtime for sure and maybe the other Tati films, I can't remember exactly. Oh, and the 400 Blows.

Ok, I already have Army of Shadows but I can only afford one film from the ones that are going OOP. Between Last Year, Le Cercle Rouge and Leon Morin, Which one would you recommend the most?

Free delivery to the states, competitive prices, sturdy packaging and excellent customer service.
One caveat to this: Amazon.uk will deduct VAT (national sales tax) from their posted prices, Eureka's storefront does not. For one title VAT and shipping can be more or less a wash but if you're buying multiple titles Amazon.uk can be the better way to go.

And speaking of Eureka's storefront, when's the last time they had any kind of promotion or sale? It seems like it's been a while.

It's almost-but-not-quite made different shopping lists over the years and this will definitely nudge it up. In fact, if I'd known this last month I would have included it in my Criterion flash order.

Gonna head to Best Buy in a bit and have them PM the Amazon price.
I can't remember seeing too many foreign language Criterions at Best Buy. You might want to call first.

As for suggestions, two things...

If you think you might get any of them, get them all but you don't have to do it today. When titles go out of print they follow a fairly predictable cycle...immediate frenzy (that would be today) followed by a fairly lengthy period (definitely weeks, probably months) where reasonably priced OOP titles still show up at Amazon or on the shelves at B&N and then boom one day they're really gone and ebay prices start climbing. And all of their prices will get pretty high. The Man Who Fell to Earth prices aren't in The Third Man range but they're still pretty high. Any of the Melvilles will get in that same range (at a bare minimum) someday.

So if you're at all on the fence, don't wait too long.

Specific suggestion: I really like Leon Morin, Priest. In fact, if I could only keep one of the three Melvilles that's probably the one I would go with.

It's deliberate and dialogue driven without ever being slow or plodding, it's heavy and a bit somber without ever getting sappy or melodramatic, it's very interesting visually and the two main performances are absolutely fantastic.

Le Cercle Rouge goes so well alongside Army of Shadows. That's my choice of the options.

Le Cercle Rouge and Octagon is right there is that frenzy that happens when Criterion titles go OOP but many titles stay stocked at retailer whse's Barnes & Noble etc until stock is depleted. Criterion themselves will get rid of stock per their contract but doesn't mean they are gonna be gone fast. I would get them as you can buy them. But Le Cercle Rouge first and foremost. IMO. and I own them all expect Mafioso (DVD)

Remember how much Marienbad was going for went the R1 DVD was OOP? It'll likely top that easily.

Best to get a copy (It's the BEST Criterion blu IMO) before it reaches Third Man-like prices. I suspect the Marienbad stock will sell through very quickly.

I do love Marienbad, and I was lucky enough to get the paper / cardboard style cover in MINT condition at a local store the day it was released. So many in stores look like they were rolled on all sides. I also have the plastic Criterion replacement case.. which looks blah complared the paper case.. only because of how the raised lettering works.

Yes. I own both cases for Last Year at Marienbad.

I'll probably watch that Blu-ray this weekend. I revisited my old DVD copy a couple of times just before I bought my Blu-ray player, so I have not sat down to watch my Blu-ray copy just yet. I have a feeling that my mind will be blown by seeing this movie in high definition.

Most likely. If it ever screens near you then don't miss it. You won't forget seeing Marienbad on the big screen.

I love B&N but even with a 20% coupon Marienbad would run $32 there.

ImportCD would probably be a better fallback (particularly if one is ordering multiple titles).

ShellOilJunior I think many will not pay much attention to Last Year at Marienbad but will regret it later. I can see the BLU fetching top dollar pricing even if Studio Canal issues a BLU in the US later on. I also recall an interview with a couple of the peeps from Criterion and one of them seemed to champion the release of the film on BLU. It was during the period when new monthly announcements were sometimes sad ones when a film only got a DVD release only and not a BLU release. We were lucky with Marienbad for sure.

And on previous posts I only mention Barnes & Noble for those who want to try to get a decent looking case etc because you never know what the WHSE's ship out. w/ Marienbad it is a gamble for sure. I hope all get great looking cases for that one.

Was hoping to find Leon Morin for less than $30. The 20% off brings it to $30 at BN.

Happened to be on Facebook right when Criterion posted. Jumped right into action on Amazon. Ordered third party on three of them as Amazon had shipping at several days later, implying they had no fresh stock and are now unlikely to get more. Marienbad was in stock a little while ago.

Indeed. It was a BIG announcement because it had been OOP R1 for a long time and to get a Blu-ray in 2009 of an art film was sweet.
