I watched Pulp Fiction on Blu-ray for the first time last night (after seeing it a million times in previous formats). This is an awesome-looking film on Blu-ray, and the particular cinematic style really pops out of the screen.
It occurred to me that I love Melville's Le Samourai for the same reason that I've always loved Pulp Fiction. Jef Costello's gangster style of dress and overall manner was somewhat out of place in a 1967 movie, and it seemed to imitate the 1950s gangster look. Instead of lending a comedic effect to the film, however, this anachronism just serves to make the film feel timeless, as though it could take place in any given decade. Pulp Fiction is the same way. Jules and Vincent wear the black suits, Vincent drives the old car, and references to older songs carry on throughout the film, but these things give the movie a timeless look that still feels relevant and fresh today. |

If you liked it at all, it's very much worth it.

Nice to finally own titles that are going OOP. Hopefully I can sell my Army of Shadows in the future for Pierrot le Fou.

Just give me Charulata and The Apu Trilogy and I'll be happy. Really, more of a Ghatak fan than Ray so hoping they put out those World Cinema Foundation films first.

"The Criterion Collection, which has restored some of the world's best-known classics and critically successful obscure movies like 'The Passion of Joan of Arc' (1928), M (1931), 'The Children of Paradise' (1945) apart from Chaplin films and works of Akira Kurosawa, is set to do a repeat with 18 of Satyajit Ray's movies."
Unfortunately, I think they are referring to the original restoration (Passion of Joan of Arc) that they did with the DVD...though it should show up on BD within the next few years, as there is a UK version out now. |

IMO Apu trilogy is overrated in comparison to the rest of Ray's output...I guess people like trilogies and stuff or perhaps have not seen enough of his other films, but I find something like Days and Nights in The Forest far more sophisticated and emotionally stronger than the films of that trilogy.

![]() Easily one of the top films that Criterion put out. It's so good that I really want to rewatch it again (despite seeing it a couple weeks ago). Loved the acting and the storyline and the connections that were formed and lost. Ahh.....it's just so fantastic! |

I found the second viewing to be even better. The question the cop asks at the end of the film is like a hammer-blow. Just an all around well thought-out, well crafted film. The minimalistic style is done better than most films of its kind.

Noted. I have only seen I believe 8 of his films by my count, as I said, I'm more of a Ritwik Ghatak fan (and Mrinal Sen) than Ray.
