As I mentioned Great Owl is a one of the best posters on this forum. His opinion on music and films on this thread is very appreciated.

Anyone can ignore a post. I am glad I do not have to resort to urination to diss a post.
Thanks for the kind words! I appreciated the input about Inglourious Basterds. If everyone agreed about every film, then this would be a boring thread.

Except for Le Samourai. People who dislike Le Samourai are just wrong.

Actually, you need to go back and see what comment I was responding to - it was the one about a trend.
i will have to go back, but i have not yet.

Quote:
Point: Trends are set when a large majority of people do something to change a current practice. This is the very reason I pointed out in my post, which you quoted, that there is a distinction between consuming/purchasing songs, as downloads, and purchasing CDs, meaning albums.

In other words:

If I purchased 15 downloads of individual songs, this does not mean that I consumed more content than if I purchased one CD (with the same content/15 songs). 15 purchases vs. 1 purchase. Same content.
i get, and understand this, but if there is no distinction in sales data, 15 downloads could just as easily be the 15 downloads of albums. i am just saying it can go both ways. also, in the article there were statistics, which i quoted, that stated that there was a 6% increase in digital download expenditures. that is real data. as in amount spent, not total number of downloads. further, another quoted statistic was that cd buyers increased 2% while digital download buyers increased 14% (i think, i can not remember the exact number). the article did not state past year's data, but i venture that would be several years of that kind of action. sort of a trend. you will again refer to what you said, above, but just as i can not say it was all albums, you can not say it was all single single songs that were downloaded. all that one can logically take from the numbers given is that digital expenditures increased and digital buyers increased at a much higher rate than did cd buyers.

Quote:
Very clearly, however, an increased number of CD buyers -- hence my use of sales -- means that this consumption of physical product has increased after a decline. Which automatically dismisses the notion that there is a trend as the one pointed out in the quote.
i do not know, i just do not agree with this, nor do i see how this is very clear. more people may have purchased, but the article itself clearly states that CD sales decreased. more people buying less simply does not equal "consumption of physical product increased after a decline" if sales of physical product actually yet, again, decreased. the article clearly states that cd sales decreased.

Quote:
This very same issue by the way has been used to produce some pretty naive "observations" and pass them as facts by the folks who are in love with "the streaming future". So, unless someone comes up with a very detailed breakdown showing that content consumption levels amongst those who purchase downloads and those who purchase physical media has been altered -- and I really do not know how you do that without completely destroying someone's privacy -- for me this comment says it all:

“And 10 years after the advent of Apple’s iTunes, far more people buy CDs than downloads."
again, with the multiple decade head start and the entrenched moat that the CD industry had, this simply does not mean that much to me, and totally ignores what has been happening in the industry and all of the other data provided in the article. i am going on memory, but i believe the article stated there were 78 million cd buyers, while it was 45 million digital buyers. in 2011. i believe, again, i don't have the data, that the last two years would sway even further towards the digital side. even disregarding an even higher separation in growth rates, take the 2% cd buyer growth and the 14% digital buyer growth from the article going forward two years and the numbers get even closer (81 million to 59 million), as they will continue to do. regardless, the more important numbers would be actual sales/expenditures, as buyers can mean very little (as was shown above), which i do not have, just as the article does not. as i said previously, all my comments were in reply to your comments with regards to the article.

UPDATE: i really need to read everyone's posts before replying. i point to retablo's post. the billboard article state many things...

"Digital continues to ascend, with download stores finally catapulting to be king of the hill in album sales, outpacing mass merchants by selling 111.7 million units, versus the 93.1 million sold in discount department stores like Walmart and Target. By percentage, download stores now account for 37.2% of all album sales, up from 31.2% at the end of 2011. Last year, the two categories were much closer 103.6 million to 103.1 million with the big-box stores on top."

"digital track sales were 1.34 billion units"

CD sales continued their decline, dropping 13.5% while digital album sales jumped 14.1%. Vinyl album sales actually managed to outpace digital's sales growth, increasing by 17.7% to 4.55 million units. But that's still a meager 1.44% of all U.S. album sales in 2012.

That's album sales, not individual sales.

Kinda disppointed in Criterion Cast because they do good work. Here they're just trying way too hard. They should have went with something like: Lena Dunham to pose for Playboy.

I would've picked "Wes Anderson gives up film to enter monastery", m'self.

(One of the things that killed off Internet April Fools' were its fans that even put the jokes in fan niches:
Every movie site was "Ultimate 3-disk edition of (worst movie)", every animation/anime site was "Spielberg to announce live-action adaptation of (annoying title)", gamer sites would devolve into arguments over the next rumored hardware releases. Which caused it to be more of an annual fruit-fly pest infestation every year, than any exploration of creativity--The only creativity in sites was to think outside the box, and go as silly and implausible as possible, to appreciate the hard work that goes into them.
Blll Hunt at Digital Bits coined the term "April-Free Zone", and it's caught on since. Still, glad to know Criterion's not going back to the Kindergarten Cop joke-well that bit them in the rear last year.)

Well she did do an interview with Playboy recently, no joke and no pose, and besides, doesn't she get naked enough in her films and TV shows? I don't watch them. I defend her a lot on this board, but I'm not a fan of her work. I just think people get too worked up over her.

Saw the joke on twitter a few hours ago and was wondering when people were going to discuss it.

Wish I could say my speeding ticket this morning was joke, but alas, it wasn't. That's about 10 Criterions at 50% off I'm not getting at the moment. At least the cop was nice enough to give me the lowest fine, and not suspend my license, as it was my first ever infraction. It's not even going to affect my insurance premiums.

abdrews, why the shock at de Havilland being in My Cousin Rachel? Thought everyone knew that. Apparently she and Burton hated each other, and both Vivian Leigh and Greta Garbo turned down the role of Rachel before she took it. Also, Nunally Johnson wrote the screenplay, and he's the father of Norah Johnson, who in turn, wrote The World of Henry Orient, one of the films I desperately want in the collection. As much as I want Dolenz senior in the collection, I want Peter Sellers more.

Just realized Army of Shadows is OOP. Been meaning to pick this up for a while now, so I want to grab it before the prices get insane. Anyone know where I can still order a copy that ships to Canada? Thanks!

Amazon, Deep Discount, B&N, wtc. depends on what you want to pay. You could also see if anyone's trading it.

that is not correct. Retablo's article only included "mass merchants" such as wal mart and target. it had nothing to do with digital stores only.

as per your own article:

"The takeover has spread so widely that in 2012, for the first time in history, digital stores became the primary outlet for buying albums, eclipsing mass merchants that had been the leading sales sector for the previous five years."

futher in the article:

"While album sales at digital services outpaced those at mass merchants, they were far exceeded by the combined sales of physical albums at all outlets."

The breakdown in total album sales:

Digital services such as iTunes and Amazon MP3: 37%
Walmart, Target and other mass merchants: 29%
Best Buy and similar chains: 15%
Non-traditional outlets such as Amazon physical sales, mail order, venue and fan club sales: 10%
Indie stores: 7%

done. ok, more total volume sold, but again, this whole discussion is pointless, as that is all you seemingly deem important. you don't address any comments about digital growth, physical decline or these trends, numbers of which are laced throughout the three articles that have been brought up by both you and retablo. essentially, those three issues are what this whole discussion was about. you spoke of naive "observations" and "the streaming future," but if you actually read all the numbers presented, it clearly shows that digital is increasing and physical is decreasing, quickly. i attempted to get you to comment on statements you made that i feel where not exactly accurate, and to address these numbers, but it appears that was for not.

c'est la vie. it is only a matter of time. in other news, i finally get to watch rashomon tonight!!!!

How much are you willing to pay? Some Canadian resellers have them for 40 on the Canadian Amazon site.

The reviews in this site both indicate that the StudioCanal editions of Army of Shadows and Le Cercle Rouge have a slight edge over the Criterion editions in terms of the intended colors and such.

Unfortunately, those StudioCanal editions will not play on my Region A Blu-ray player.

Solution 1: get a BD player for a computer, and AnyDVD to strip off the region coding, get an HDMI cable to hook the computer to the laptop. I have a BD drive in my Vaio, for when I'm home visiting my parents who do not have a region free player. I also have a BD burner in my desktop, in case I need to make a backup.

Soultion 2: get a region free player. Dunno what ones are available south, but I spent 75 bucks on a cheap Seiki at Wally World. Since it's a cheap Chinese brand, you can easily access the factory settings menu, and set your DVD playback to 0, as it does the PAL conversion for you, and I have my BD region set to B. I have a decent Panasonic for everything else other than Region B.

Also, some Studio Canals only sold in the UK are region free. My copy of The Graduate is.
