Pedro Almodovar is one of few directors that still can make an awesome drama.
Okay, yeah, it's coming back to me.

As for Pedro Almodovar, it's a shame he isn't represented by the Criterion Collection. I can easily see Talk to Her, All About My Mother and Women on the Verge of a nervous Breakdown fitting in. I'd flat out love to see more Spanish films in the collection, especially considering i speak the language.

Terrence Malick thinks so. I think the term can be applied pretty subjectively, I would call There Will Be Blood, Drive and Winter's Bone art films. I'm sure other people would not though.
Snicket, it's safe to say Antonioni is my favorite director. I highly recommend seeing L'Avventura first seeing as Red Desert subsequently elaborated on that film's innovations.

If you want an art film: see a Miklos Jansco or a Mike Snow film. Terrence Malick looks like Spielberg compared to those two.

I totally agree with Pedro Almodovar being underrepresented in the criterion catalogue.

It is strange, I think I mentioned this to Coop once, a moment of déjà vu.

Talk to Her would be an awesome criterion release.

I was reading the essay that came with Still Walking and it mentioned a few more of his films briefly and they all sounded outstanding. I look forward to checking out the rest of his films.

I'm not sure if I missed a discussion about the titles going out of print, but does anyone have an opinion about what this means for Le Doulos and Le Deuxieme Souffle?
Both have been on my radar for ages, but I've been hoping to see Criterion upgrade them.
I'm guessing that Studio Canal has chosen not to renew distribution rights and is planning on doing their own releases...
Does anyone know and heard a rumour?

Yup, we did. He's my favorite director.

A boxed set of his films would be my own ultimate-wishlist-item from Criterion (or anyone else, really)

I'd rather have his films released that aren't available on DVD here first...but anything would be great at this point.

All films are art. Weather they're good or bad art is up to the individual watching them. Art House film might be a better term for Criterion titles.

I'd like to call him one of my favorites as well, but I feel like I might need to see more of his films before I'm able to say that. I've seen 7.

Umm, if you put Mike Snow on your wishlist, please know that his films are difficult to get into to say the least. Wavelength for example consists of a single 45 minute zoom and filtering effects. Some say "nothing happens," I say "Snow is unearthing new ways to see the world", specifically a room with four windows and a hanging picture of ocean waves.

Am I the only one who wants a Bly ray release of this film?

All post-L'Avventura I assume. I'm no better, ive only seen eight. I feel ashamed I haven't seen his early films.

I agree! My Uncle, whom is a writer in Mexico City, promised to bring me a stack of early Almodovar films, but never did bring them. This was over a year ago, I still haven't forgiven him.

Yes, L'Avventura, L'Eclisse, Red Desert, Blow-Up, Zabriskie Point, The Passenger, Identification of a Woman

...Is the 8th one (I assume these 7 are included) one that you'd recommend?

Having finished Certified Copy for the third time, I'm fairly confident in saying it's the best modern film Criterion has released. Need to see more Kiarostami, but from what I have seen, this is easily his best work.

I've managed to see all of them over the years and have loved every one...which is why I can easily call him my favorite. All of them are available in region 2, I'm pretty sure. I don't know why the same can't be said about the US...and to make that worse, the ones that are available have gone in and out of print over the years.

Agreed on all of it . I also haven't seen many of his films, but this was easily the best and managed to become one of my favorite films ever.

You haven't seen La Notte? Absolutely! I recommend it. I have a feeling you'll especially take to it. It has more of a structure than most Antonioni films, but there are numerous indelible sequences in the film. In some ways it's like an Antonioni action film: atmospheric set piece after set piece.

I'm especially confident Great Owl will like it. If there ever was an Antonioni film where it's alright to bask in the beauty of Monica Vitti, this is it. Pro-B will correct me if I'm wrong, but this is her secured role.

Ooh, have you guys seen The Wind Will Carry Us? I know everyone talks about Taste of Cherry, but I personally find the former more fascinating. I still don't know what to make of the meta twist at the end of Taste of Cherry.

Nope, I haven't seen it yet! I really need to, though. If Criterion ever does announce that boxed set, I'd be very excited. I do think I'd like it, since it's placed right in the middle of the two films I liked the most.

I feel as if I haven't really seen it, it begs to be seen in HD or projected theatrically.Who knows we might luck out and get the set this year.
