There was a Criterion customer service phone # posted a few pages back, if you care to call them.

Just an FYI - first post of any page, just above it on the right "SEARCH THIS THREAD". Works really well. Makes finding things easy. Just search "phone number". Pulls it up.

Hello,

I just saw the comments about the supplemental features on the Criterion releases of Yojimbo and Sanjuro and wanted to quickly address them:

1. The score - I consider a score of 3 to be good, and this is precisely how I feel about the supplemental features on each disc -- they are good. Also, if you take a closer look, you would notice that each disc has only two key pieces: Akira Kurosawa: It Is Wonderful to Create (two parts) and the audio commentaries with Mr. Price. The rest is trailers, teasers and still galleries. Plus the complementary booklets for each disc.

2. The quality - One of the reasons why I actually tend to include the exact descriptions Criterion provide for their supplemental features (and "review" only the technical specifications) is because almost always they are very succinct yet accurate. I've come to realize during the years - while looking at the supplemental features they offered on their SDVDs - that different people react to Criterion's supplemental features in different ways. Example: the audio commentary on Sanjuro is very informative, with some very specific comparisons that highlight the differences and similarities between Yojimbo and Sanjuro, but at the same time it is notably dry. This is exactly the type of commentaries I like -- to the point, with strong analysis and not too many "entertaining" comments. (On a slightly related note, this is also one of the reasons why I like to keep my film reviews dry and factual; I prefer the succinct, Variety-type of reviews). However, many people prefer audio commentaries that have a more conversational, laid-back tone (as the one included on the Days of Heaven BD release). With other words, as CCFlix pointed out, I think it would be quite redundant if a reviewer expressed a strong personal opinion...on what is essentially another (reviewer's) opinion.

I hope this helps.

I'd say hardly the weakest. It's a pretty good film if you look at it from a story. Malick tells his stories by images and that's how it works. The story is pretty straightforward. It's a short movie, no way to extend it. And Gere wasn't that great, I don't know why he was even added into the film. Shepard however did a great job. It's a pretty simple film that has given people different outlooks on.

I think it's much better than Badlands.

Now to make this relate to Criterion, I watched PORT OF SHADOWS yesterday and it was terrific. Highly recommended
Well Malick's films are really one about beauty and his stories like I said before are told throughout images. And those silent scenes with the characters, you're supposed to take that time to understand what those characters are feeling.

Though Malick films aren't for everyone I consider Thin Red Line his best because it's a realistic depiction of war and how it terrorizes men.

Watched Contempt bd for the first time & enjoyed it very much, but I have to say that I liked Pierrot Le Fou much more, maybe this is because Pierrot Le Fou was my first Godard film. Is this just me? Any other Godard films anyone would recommend?

Bande à part and Une femme est une femme are two that immediately come to mind..... although Vivre sa vie which comes out in a couple of months was pretty widely praised......

Breathless is a good one too..... he worked with Truffaut on it...... so you can try to pick up on both of their styles (I can not... I just see "Godard" when I watch it, but either way, they're both French-New-Wave guys...... so to the untrained eye (like mine) it's easy to see how any Truffaut influence would be muddied)

Hey Kev,

Try to get all Criterion releases for Godard but save "Made in U.S.A." for last because you'll know the context of the relationship and the final feature film between Godard and Anna Karina. Also, you get an idea of why he was slightly ticked off when he filmed "2 or 3 Things I Know About Her".

Also, make sure you watch the documentaries as well. It's important to understand the mindset Godard was in...especially during the good and the tumultuous years between he and Karina.

Thanks kndy! Very helpful info. Off to watch the extras on Contempt.

Well, actually... if you look at all of the dvdbeaver comparisons for picture-boxed (DVD) titles, particularly some of the older ones, at least a few of them were cropped to picture-box size rather than shrunk.

Watched Chungking Express tonight and have to say, it was a lot better then I thought it was going to. Ill def have to make it a purchase soon. I saw Fallen Angels about a year ago and it didnt do much for me. good thing the latter is being released on blu so I can revisit it shortly.

So for him; for me: Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love, Fallen Angels, in that order.

"Chungking Express" is a film that I enjoyed much more than "Fallen Angels". I really enjoyed the Blu-ray release!
