I've largely stayed away from Iranian films in the past, but having liked several in the past couple years, I'm noticing that there are some great ones mixed in with the not-so-great that should be looked into.

Yup, I've yet to see a Mohsen Makhmalbaf film (the subject of Kiarostami's Close Up).

Hooray - my copy of The Man Who Knew Too Much just arrived!

As well as non-Criterion copy of The Third Man and Laura.

Not sure how soon we'll get to watch them, as we've just started working through the Avengers movies in preparation for Iron Man 3.

Why not buy the gaps in your Almodovar DVD collection from the UK?

They are all available there (cheap) and all DVDs are region free in blu ray players.

I spent about $80 AU buying all of his movies from the UK just before Broken Embraces was released. I've spent a little more now with the new release blu rays as they come out.

I strongly reccomend the film. I haven't seen it since I first started getting into "art house" films, but I'm sure it still holds up. If anything else, some of the symbolism went over my head (as I remember it being fascinatingly cryptic). I couldn't find one single way to interpret everything (which would ultimately be trite), but I did get a valuable glimpse into a community.

It's a good essay and like you, I can't wait to try out some of the recipes included in the same booklet!

My other favorite films of his include After Life, Nobody Knows and I Wish. I haven't been able to get ahold of Distance or Air Doll, though.

Finally sat down and watched LA PROMESSE and THE KID WITH A BIKE back to back, as well as almost all the extras on KID WITH A BIKE. I thought LA PROMESSE was very impressive and thought-provoking, although the hand-held verite style was occasionally distracting, at least at first. Still quite powerful. On the other hand, THE KID WITH THE BIKE was simply and unexpectedly amazing, with brilliant performances all around and extremely touching characterizations. The very long interview with the Dardenne brothers is very thorough and a fine substitute for an audio commentary.

Oh, and yes, STILL WALKING is definitely another wonderful film. I double-featured it with SUMMER HOURS a couple years ago, another fine Criterion title.

I'd never seen a Kiarostami film - but was keen to based on hearing lots of good things about Certified Copy - until one day I saw Shirin on our cable schedule.

10 minutes was about all I could bear, the only thing it did for me was give me a good laugh. Not because it was terrible (and I imagine it would have probably been very good had I managed to stomach it all the way to the end), but because it's exactly the sort of film that gives art house films a bad name. All I could think of was Joe 6 Pack sitting down to watch this and going WTF.

I still want to see Certified Copy some time, but it would want to be a lot better than Shirin

It's one of the best films that's come out in my lifetime, imo. I've seen it 4 times including once at the cinematheque. Before the screening the c'theque director asked who had already seen the film - many people raised their hands. Then he asked what piqued our interest in seeing it and a girl replied: "the director of the film is excellent". You won't get this at the multiplex

Tuscany and Juliette Binoche are just so gorgeous. The film is right in my wheelhouse because I enjoy cerebral movies with deep conversations. AK's screenplay is great - especially when they're at the trattoria with the barista. AK takes an incredible risk and it pays off big time.

I sold my DVDs of L'Avventura and L'Eclisse for a lot of money, because I figured that it will only be a matter of time before they see the light of day on Blu-ray. I hope that I'm not mistaken, because I'm quite fond of both films.

Red Desert is a wonderful Criterion Blu-ray, and I need to pick up Identification of a Woman. The bands featured in the soundtrack to Identification of a Woman are enough to make me interested.

Does anyone know and heard a rumour?

I bought Le Doulos and Le Deuxieme Souffle on DVD the day that they were released, and am holding on tightly to them, because I revisit both on a frequent basis. I've been unloading a lot of my DVD collection in recent months for space and for extra cash, but those are staying on my shelf until they get some Blu-ray treatment, along with the other Melville films (Le Samourai, Un Flic, Les Enfants Terribles).

I've heard that StudioCanal may release them, but I hope that SC does so with region free discs.

I believe that Criterion still owns the rights to Le Samourai. That's what I'm praying for, anyway.
