On the other hand, THE KID WITH THE BIKE was simply and unexpectedly amazing, with brilliant performances all around and extremely touching characterizations. The very long interview with the Dardenne brothers is very thorough and a fine substitute for an audio commentary.

Oh, and yes, STILL WALKING is definitely another wonderful film. I double-featured it with SUMMER HOURS a couple years ago, another fine Criterion title.
Glad you enjoyed the Dardennes' films. Have you seen any of their other stuff? If you're not too picky about watching films on DVD, you definitely should check out Le fils. I'd say it's their masterpiece.

Summer Hours is another one that I need to revisit soon.

Default Purple Noon

I finally got around to watching Purple Noon last night. Wow, what an entertaining film! After the film, I checked out the supplements, including the trailer, which I am so glad to not have watched prior to the feature as it gives too much of the story away.

Tuscany and Juliette Binoche are just so gorgeous. The film is right in my wheelhouse because I enjoy cerebral movies with deep conversations. AK's screenplay is great - especially when they're at the trattoria with the barista. AK takes an incredible risk and it pays off big time.
It's probably the digital film for me. It's just beautiful to look at, and the window reflection in the car scenes are amazing.

Binoche is astounding in this. So much so that Shimmel's performance just pales in comparison. He can't hold his own against her, especially during the dinner scene. She is just on another level compared to most actors.

I'm bad about never watching the trailers that are included as Criterion supplements. In fact, I rarely watch the trailers on Blu-rays or DVDs at all.

Glad that you enjoyed the film! It's one of the coolest-looking movies around, with the Mediterranean and such.

Badlands was pretty cool. Reminded me of Bonnie and Clyde.

That's all good to know. I think I've only seen 2 films starring Juliette Binoche (Chocolat and Three Colors - Blue), and loved her in both. You just helped me move Certified Copy a little higher on my "to buy" list. Thanks.

I'm seeing on the front page of this website that BFI Video released a Blu-ray of Roman Polanski's Tess overseas. Hopefully, a Criterion release of the movie will show up on these shores before long.

You can use this link to check your local store stock and to reserve a copy.

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/dvd-...n=715515104616

Yes I know it costs more at Barnes but Barnes will sometimes do a coupon around Thursday timeframe and if you have a Member discount for in store that helps.
Wow, that's really weird

I've had mine pre-ordered on Amazon for quite a while, so I think I'll just wait. I wouldn't watch it immediately anyway lol.

Thanks for posting, though!

Your welcome. Just dying to see what The Film Foundation's transfer for Richard III is like. Just picked mine up at Barnes & Noble.

I disagree. Shimmel is quite excellent. It takes two strong leads for this kind of film to succeed and I felt Shimmel matched Binoche. He plays a character that is able to function in the art world but in real life he has his faults (allegedly, based on your interpretation).

He's certainly good. I just don't find his performance to be nearly as impressive and nuanced as Binoche's.

This is more of a compliment to Binoche than it is a criticism to the film.

I really ought to pull the trigger on Certified Copy. That's a candidate for one of the Barnes & Noble sales someday.

Juliette Binoche is one of the very best, and she's outstanding in Michael Haneke's Hidden (Caché), which I upgraded into my Blu-ray collection a few months back with the region-free import.

Caché is the only Haneke film that I can say I really like. His full-force nihilism doesn't seem to be in full effect for this one.

Caché is my favorite Haneke film by far as well. Funny Games, Time of the Wolf, and The White Ribbon are all fascinating, but they do not reverberate quite as much with me. (I never got around to seeing the others, but I would like to see The Piano Teacher and Amour someday.)

^You two have echoed my own thoughts, Love Cache, hated Time of The Wolf, White Ribbon was a mix of brilliant and disappointing elements.

I like all of the works of his I've seen a lot (not all of them, but enough). I really enjoy his full-force nihilism, there's not enough of that in the inudstry in my opinion.

After all the gushing for Certified Copy I'm sort of feeling guilty for putting my copy up for sale.

Does anybody want to talk some Bergman with me?

I have only seen a few of his works, Seventh Seal, which I though was excellent and is on my list to buy.

Persona, for some reason this did not capture me as much, I watched it in film school and definitely appreciated it, but did not enjoy it on the same level as Seventh Seal.

So how do Summer with Monika, Summer Interlude and Wild Strawberries fit in here? I really enjoy the themes in his work, and The history of cinema doc on netflix recently peaked my interest in seeing them (Strawberries is actually on my DVR I just haven't found the time to dive into it.)

Wild Strawberries goes along well with The Seventh Seal, I think. For one thing, it shares an actor or two. It also features some of the same ethereal qualities. I sold my DVD of Wild Strawberries last month to make room for the upcoming Blu-ray, and I cannot wait.

When it comes to Bergman, I'm all for the five-plus hour televised version of Fanny and Alexander. That's my favorite Bergman film, and it's just an outright joy to experience from beginning to end. I took a long afternoon a few weeks ago and watched the entire thing.

I have not seen Summer with Monika or Summer Interlude, but I shall soon.

That may be true, but he seems to be reveling in it. The opening shot, from my view, is a good example of this.

The Piano Teacher was a relentless exercice in nihilism for me.
