I still have the original Criterion DVD release of THE THIRD MAN from like, ten years ago. I continue to kick myself for not buying the new one when that upgrade came out.

Just for my information, do you have the list of movies that Studiocanal currently owns rights.

I guess has it been stated how long criterion has the rights to distribute Le Samourai.

I did consider the other part of your post - it doesn't mean I'm not inept, and unable to locate the other thread . . . which I still can't do. But no worries, I'll keep searching.

To your point, I love Mamet too, especially the Spanish Prisoner.

The Wages of Fear is such an epic action film, and it's one of the best Criterion movies as far as sheer edge-of-your-seat tension goes. I fell in love with Vera Clouzot as well after seeing The Wages of Fear and Diabolique. It's a shame that her time ended so soon.

Le Corbeau is another insidiously amazing Clouzot film, but I prefer The Wages of Fear and Diabolique.

What actually occurred with the release of Ran? I was never well informed about the situation.

Ran was one of criterion's popular DVD release. Can that, technically, happen with Le Samourai?

Here's a list on IMDB: -- though I'm sure it's partial as they actually have one of the largest film libraries in the world...(though this link doesn't name all of these titles).

If you've already seen the movie, you'll get it.
For someone who has never seen Videodrome and who has purchased the Blu-ray as a blind buy, though, it might raise an eyebrow or two, to say the least!
I can imagine someone new to the film inserting the Blu-ray, seeing the main menu, and wondering what he has got himself into.
Which is exactly what happened to me. I have been a fan of Cronenberg's The Fly and Naked Lunch, but not of Crash (sorry to all the Canucks out there.) I blind bought Videodrome with apprehensions. I remember seeing the trailer during the previews for several movies I went to see theatrically in the early 80's. The trailer, which looked "hokey" to me, really turned me off. If it weren't for Criterion making it part of the collection, I probably would never have seen it. It has become my favorite Cronenberg, although I have not seen Scanners. I am, however, looking forward to that eventual purchase.

I was reading an interview with Ignatiy Vishnevetsky (the great writer of the Monsieur Verdoux Criterion essay) and he mentioned watching Cronenberg's Crash over 40 times one year.

As for Scanners, sure the exploding head scenes are great, but it didn't leave much of a mark all those years ago.

The Wages of Fear is in my top three favorite Criterion Collection releases. I blind bought it when it originally came to blu-ray, and it is clearly the film that I have viewed the most since that purchase.

[Show spoiler]The scene were Vera Clouzot scrubs the floor- wow! Henri Clouzot makes sure that the audience gets to look right down the top of his wife's shirt- BALLS!

When I was in high school, my favorite Cronenberg movie was The Fly. I had a VHS dub of that film that I had taped from an HBO showing, and I must have watched it a million times.

I did not quite "get" Videodrome when I first saw it back in the 1980s, but subsequent viewings paid off in spades. After a while, I decided that it was my favorite Cronenberg film by far, and I still feel that way.

One of my favorite albums from the 1980s is Flesh For Lulu - Long Live The New Flesh. The album title is drawn from Videodrome, of course.

He's made so many great films but The Fly, A History of Violence, and Eastern Promises take the cake for me.

As far as David Cronenberg is concerned, I've seen Cosmopolis, A Dangerous Method (last weekend), Eastern Promises, eXistenZ, The Fly, A History Of Violence, and Videodrome. I actually watched both eXistenZ and The Fly yesterday and both films entertained me throughout. The only film I can't see myself buying is Fast Company. It doesn't sound very appealing to me.

I'm really excited for Naked Lunch next week and Scanners (whenever Criterion decides to officially announce it). Also, I hope we see some of his other films sooner than later in the collection or through another studio.

Just curious, how does the Fly hold up for you now? I love Cronenberg's work, especially the earlier stuff, and including Fly, and would love to see a spine number on Brood or Scanners, for example.

I admittedly have never seen Cronenberg's Crash before. The premise has always intrigued me, and I like both Deborah Kara Unger and Rosanna Arquette. I've just never found the time or the inclination to purchase the film.

File under: "I might buy Crash if it is ever released as a Criterion title, so that I can completely justify the criticisms from the recent thread in the main forum page."

Sadly, I have no idea, because I have not revisited the film in a couple of decades.

I can still pretty much quote The Fly from memory, though. A few weeks ago, I had to remove one of my toenails that was coming off after an ultramarathon race, and I told friends that it was going to the "Seth Brundle Museum of Natural History."

I would love to see The Fly again, and I'm sure that my revisit would be a combination of marveling at Cronenberg's style and laughing at the 1980s nostalgia memories associated with the film.
