Speaking of war movies...
Have any of you seen the Criterion DVD, Overlord? ![]() During my recent mass streamlining of my DVD collection for extra cash and space, Overlord was one of the DVDs that I just refused to part with, and it remains in my collection. I love this film. Overlord tells the story of a young soldier entering the war, and splices that narrative with stock WWII footage throughout the film. The stock WWII footage is chilling, and shows the terrifying machinery involved in the battles. |

Love this movie. I've got it on DVD. Always be a big Rebecca Pidgeon fan. I believe she is Mamet's wife? Not sure.

![]() I am already nominating this as the best blu ray cover art of 2013. I know it is early, but it would be very hard to top this cover art. Who is the artist behind the cover art, by the way? Last edited by Fellini912; 04-04-2013 at 02:45 PM. |

Well, The Man Who Fell to Earth has been OOP for awhile now at it's case is still available. It will probably remain available until they sell out, just like the blu-rays themselves.

On the topic of war movies (and Criterion), one of my all-time favorites is Ascent from the Larisa Shepitko Eclipse set. It was a blind buy for me, and a wonderful surprise. It is a stunningly realized and unspeakably powerful movie, highly recommended.
Also from the collection (on DVD), I'm a huge fan of The Shop on Main Street, more about the Holocaust than a war film or a combat film, it's also richly textured, bringing some element of humor, reverie, and lightheartedness into the mix in a way that is effective and only helps to underscore the brutality and atrocity. In addition to these two, my other top war movies: Paths of Glory, Fires on the Plain, Shame (Bergman), Lacombe Lucien, Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, and A Very Long Engagement. |

Was there an insert alteration for 'The Game'? For whatever reason, I just got this one in the mail and I'm finally looking at it, and realizing how the title is barely legible because it's a dark charcoal gray on a black background, and I'm thinking I may have read that there was a change in the insert because of this, where they lightened the text up.

The Shepitko series is outstanding. I was plainly blown away by Ascent. Frankly, it might be my single favorite war movie. The black-and-white photography is gorgeous, amid snowy location shots. There are well crafted combat scenes, and the overarching story, which follows a couple of Russian soldiers, leaves an emotional impact long after viewing. Another interesting aspect of the movie is that it helps us to see war through Russian (and also German) eyes and in terms of what combat was like along the Eastern front. I've also been meaning to watch Fuller's Steel Helmet, since I love his other work, and I've heard lots of good things about it. |
