Does it mean that grain has been removed along with detail?
DVNR is image processing hardware and software made by Digital Vision. The term DNR relates to a wide range of image processing, from scratch and dust removal to grain reduction, etc.
So in this case, DVNR is the product name of a DNR system.

DNR has become a taboo phrase on this site, but it really depends on how it's implemented. You can use DNR to remove scratches but leave the film grain intact, or close to intact.

According to Digital Vision's website, DVNR is used for:

* ASC3 ME, film dust and dirt removal
* AGR4 ME, film grain and video noise reduction
* ACP, advanced colour correction
* ZOM, aspect ratio conversion and pan & scan processing
* PP, compression pre-processor
* IE, image enhancer
* BWF, brickwall filter
* ALS, anti-aliasing filter

Most if not all Criterion's booklet say that DVNR was used, yet they look great.

as long as there are engineers who oversee all of the adjustments i'm fine with that. i think Criterion has it under control.

but for other studios w/less experienced engineers, they just run an "automatic" DNR pass. when that happens you get stuff like Gladiator, catalog WB titles, etc.etc.etc.

Figured I'd throw out another film that I think is Criterion worthy and gets little mainstream attention. I'm not ever sure it ever came out on wide-release DVD. I only owned it on VHS. How about Tender Mercies? It's a top-notch low budget film starring Robert Duvall as a washed up former country music singer working to get his life back in order. Duvall won Best Actor for it and it probably was the finest work of his career. No idea if Criterion could ever get rights to it.

in the middle of Wings of Desire now. What is the significance of the color parts before he transforms into human form? Is it supposed to symbolize his desire to be 'real'?

Also, anyone know what the Asian girl says at the club with the band that makes him get that sheepish grin? No subtitles popped up at that point.

Isn't it better not knowing? Isn't that why there are no subtitles.

I always took those shots as not being his point of view, or the living world's point of view.

I used to own the old Anchor Bay DVD release and I could swear a new DVD edition is set for release if not already soon, and I think Studio Canal owns the film.

Pretty mad at Borders.
Went there today because I got a 40% dvd/blu ray coupon in my email.
Tried to purchase Science Is Fiction, and the coupon wouldn't work because they considered it a "box set" because it has more than one disc.

This is why I usually try to stay away from Borders.

I ended up getting Made In USA though.

2late . i got it @270 on my personal gold deal... but Deepdiscount.com was actually selling it for $220 a while back. so, look for their sales when it hits that price point =P.

i also snatched up all of the 16 individual SE releases cause the AK 100 25 movie boxset does not have bonus/extras at all.

AND i have also that 31st movie that Kurosawa disowned i dont have subtitles though so i dunno what they're talking about.

i also have Kagemusha on BD ofc.

Well I finally got around to watching Bottle Rocket. It was on my on demand channel to watch free. Very good movie. I plan on buying it on Criterion Blu as soon as I can find it for a reasonable price. That's right Amazon, I'm looking at you! It's been a few weeks now - time to fix the ridiculous Criterion prices already.
