I don't mean to quibble, but the Stooge fan in me is making me post. I had always thought that the Three Stooges parody (You Nazty Spy) came out before Chaplin's The Great Dictator. Not that Wikipedia is always reliable, but according to them (found under the "Significance" section) ...

"According to the Internet Movie Database, You Nazty Spy! was the first Hollywood film to spoof Hitler. It was released nine months before the Charlie Chaplin film The Great Dictator, which was then in production."

I think that's the last one that was released and the To The Wonder one hasn't been released/posted yet. Could be wrong about that though..

Oh I know, but it was something you didn't dislike as much! You actually gave it a chance! That's why you get super speshal awesome points as you actually watched it. I also have varying degrees of not liking things. As I said in a previous post, I downright hate A Safe Place. It's the only absolutely terrible thing about the set.

Also, the last Ebert review is indeed The Host, and he said it sucked:

I'm sounding like a hypocrite here, but I'm not gonna watch it because I hate all things Stephanie Meyer, and things related to Stephanie Meyer.

too soon.

I heard that The Host was supposedly better than Twilight, but I drank a 26er of Rum reading Twilight the first attempt. I gave up with 100pp left, as I had run out of rum. The second time, I read it sober, and I still can't understand how I did not smash my eBook reader.

I also made the grave mistake of reading a book called Wings by Aprilynne Pike. She's BFFs with Meyer, and her book is actually WORSE.

You have faeries which are perfect, pretty, plant people, who have eating disorders. No lie. Eating half a goddamn peach makes the damn plant person feel guilty, like they ate too much. They drink Sprite to gain more calories than drinking just water. They have sex for fun, as their reproductive organs are in their hands and backs. Male faerie secrets pollen around a flowering female, sticks his hand in her back, and she sprouts a seed, and then plants it in the ground to have babby. Seriously, it was really insulting to read.

This may be a bit of a long-game but I think Army of Shadows is going to be *quite* sought after once the supply runs dry.

Sure is. My list right now is looking to be headlined, price-wise, by the Pierre Etaix and David Lean sets, the latter of which I hope to put off no longer.

------------

As to the Chaplin/Keaton debate, I'm going to stick up for The Tramp based on the large handful of films/shorts I've seen between the two. Not to deny Keaton's technical edge - which is not a slight on Chaplin moreso than it is an acknowledgement of the genius of Keaton's sightgags and high situational comedy - but I just plain find Chaplin funnier, and The Tramp to be a more endearing character than Old Stoneface. City Lights is by far my favorite - and the best - of the films I've seen between the two (yes, I've seen The General).

i just have another quick question (which is probably stupid but i'll ask for it anyway): none of the 3 oop blu rays that i've found at b&n have the blu ray sticker on the front. i personally don't care but if i decide to buy an extra one that i might sell later on, do you think it would matter to the person and is that sticker supposed to be on all criterion blu rays?

I know one guy who did only if it had the director's signature printed showing that it was a director-approved edition. Otherwise, he didn't care.

I'm a strict collector but that wouldn't bother me at all.

thanks again! yeah, some people are like that and i was just wondering if it'll deter me from selling it later on because it doesn't have that sticker. it's weird because i always throw those away but i know some people remove them from the plastic and stick to the case.

I'm starting to feel very frustrated with Movie Mars regarding Mafioso. I ordered 1 hour after the OOP announcement. It immediately went into shipping soon on Amazon, but as of now, it still hasn't shipped. I've contacted them and they say it's processing, but I'm loosing faith that they even have it even though it was listed as in stock on Amazon from them. They even sold 11 copies on Ebay after I ordered and this one has disappeared on the internet since my order.

Anyway, just feeling the need to vent my frustrations.

Cinemach, have you seen Buster Keaton's short films? I haven't gotten through the whole set, but needless to say, they're the best things I've seen this year.

I have been reading most of the nice things said about Roger Ebert today and figured I would throw my thoughts in also. I have met him numerous times here in Chicago over the years at various functions and film fests. At first, I thought he was going to be another pretentious ass, like most people in the media in this town are. Thankfully and refreshingly, I will say with a smile on my face, that he was nothing but friendly to all that he seemed to be around him. I was even able to chat with him for a few minutes at a film function many years ago about film, as one of my friends is employed by Fox here in Chicago and I was piggybacking. Anyways, I have not been able to get out to many film fests or screening like I did many years ago, as that's what kids do to you, but I hope that my words make many remember Ebert as possibly one of the greatest minds of film ever, but also one of the nicest guys ever. I hope his wife is doing well, as she has gone through a lot with his condition for many years now and I feel for her. I don't know if Octagon, or the others from the area here ever had the pleasure to interact with Ebert, but if you did, please share it if you can.

Back to Criterion and lighten the mood: I wonder what all the blind-buyers of Marienbad will think after they finally open the case and watch it??? I wonder if even though they dislike it, will they sell it.....
Personally, I think it is one of the most hypnotic and thought provoking films you will ever see, that requires several viewings to really see more of it. Don't give up after the first viewing, as it frustrates at time, and I know Ebert would agree, it's truly one of the best and most rewarding films ever made...

I feel that amazon has a big stock on both Last Year at Marienbad and Leon Morin, Priest.
Seven o'clock this morning is now five pages back?! Put an order in to Amazon, for Léon, this morning, buoyed by your post and having vacillated on this one for about two years. E-mail confirmation suggested a delivery date of April 24. Allowing ten days or so for shipping this could be interpreted as it being available for shipping in nine days or so as opposed to the 2 or 3 weeks for shipping shown on the website...or is this just wishful thinking? Anyway if it eventually arrives I'll either be eternally grateful for your optimistic vision, or distraught over having had my dreams built up only to be irretrievably shattered.

. I really hope I do not disappoint you with my optimism.

This might give you more "hope". I ordered Leon on April 1st, amazon told me it would arrive on 15th - 17th. They just emailed me this morning saying it should arrive earlier on the 10th. I have the two-day free shipping service.

If I was gambling man, I would bet on you receiving Leon. But again I am no Bob Le Flambeur.

Those are really kind words about Mr. Ebert. I had hopes to meet him some day, to tell him how grateful I was about him (through his writing) introducing me to some great films (I use his books for reference). You are very fortunate to have met him.

I have watched part of Marienbad 13 years ago, remember how great the cinematography was, but I fell asleep. I made the mistake to watch it after some hard exam in college. I am partially blind buying it.
