I haven't seen that in a long time and I'm definitely looking forward to the upgrade.

I should probably put the book on my gohasting list too while I'm at it.

Black Orpheus? That's another great one, if it is indeed what you were reminded of. It was one that I watched without having much interest in it, and ended up being pleasantly surprised by it. I had to buy it once I watched it.

Yes...Spidey convinced me to check out Gate of Hell. I weakened and bought it from MoC. I'm not sorry...a great film and as our friend has alluded, it's quite a colorful film. You will not be disappointed.

If Spidey had a region free player, I think he might have opted for the MoC release, as I think it has nicer cover art.

Spidey...what do you think of the booklet with the Criterion version? I've noticed that MoC likes to use original release posters and the booklet with the MoC version of Gate of Hell is no exception.

Yeah, I clued in after Octagon made mention of the novel. I was thinking more of the parade aspect than the conch.

I admittedly haven't watched the film, but I do enjoy William Golding. I was one of a very small minority who actually enjoyed reading the novel iin grade 12 English. Mind you, I had read it a couple years prior just for shits and giggles. Come to think of it, I read a lot of required school literature for fun years before I had to.

Yeah, I read it in high school and really liked it too. Unlike Gatsby which I still don't get

Actually Gatsby was another one I read prior to the need to read it in Grade 12 English. However, that was to help some of my friends a grade ahead of me. I do enjoy the novel, although I am not looking forward to the new film coming out. I think I probably would be more receptive to it, if it didn't feature modern music as the soundtrack.

What are you thoughts on Harold Lloyd? And what is your second favorite Keaton film?

Totally agree about the cover art. Looks more appropriate for the cover of House blu ray, absolutely ridiculous. On the other side of the spectrum, Repo Man cover art is absolutely amazing.

I'm trying to wrap my head around some people finally realizing films like Last Year at Marienbad and Leon Morin are worthy of purchases just because they're Out of Print.

(i already considered sanjiru & yojimbo but that one is to expensiv right now (tax mostly))
thanks
My first inclination is to say get them all.
Sorry to hear that the Yojimbo/Sanjuro set has high tax, because that would be my best recommendation.
Honestly, you can't go wrong with most of those (although please be aware that the two Seijun Suzuki films are not for all tastes).
My best recommendation is to look at trailers and "3 reasons" clips at Criterion.com to see what takes your fancy.

I don't have a favourite, but you've reminded me that we should be recommending some of the Eclipse sets, such as Nikkatsu Noir and the Koreyoshi Kurahara box-set.

Not directed to me, but thought you might be interested, if no one has posted it previously. My thoughts go immediately to this:

http://www.vancouversun.com/business...993/story.html

Came across it quite unexpectedly while walking in downtown Vancouver. The story appeared in the papers that night.

Seriously? You don't see how an OOP announcement can move a title from 'eh, I dunno, we'll see' to 'ruh roh, I guess I'd better get it now if I'm ever going to'?

I don't know if anyone has made a point of this, but the Pierre Etaix is currently $42 at Amazon, which is extraordinary value for 5 feature films and 3 shorts.
I might not even wait for the next sale...

Yeah, that's what it is. It wasn't "oh! I should get this because it means I'll own something valuable!". It was more like "oh no, I want this but haven't bought it yet---I guess I really need to immediately or I might not have another chance to"

Sigh, I don't care how much either of them go up in value, I'm never gonna let them go. I've always ranked Marienbad among my most cherished Criterions.

Unrelated but, is anybody else hoping to see Zabriskie Point on BluRay someday soon? Sure, it's one of Antonioni's weaker films, but damn is it ever spectacular.

Oh, me! I don't love the film and I agree it's one of the weaker ones, but a new release would be excellent. I do like it more than Identification of a Woman.

Yep, my reasoning for buying them...I've had a list for this coming July's sale...if we get one..and they were all on it. Not anymore!!!
