The Lost Weekend is the Reefer Madness of alcohol. I like it for its corniness, certain scenes are just plain silly. Woman under the Influence by Cassavetes is by far more realistic.

I've never seen Reefer Madness. TCM is airing it later this month. Worth a Look?

As for Cassavettes, come on, he makes everyone look bad. The Killing gets a few points knocked off just for not being on the same level as Killing of a Chinese Bookie It's too bad his son (Nick) shows none of his father's greatness.

The recent Steve McQueen movie, Shame, is a rough take on sex addiction. It succeeds in making the addiction not look like fun. Great movie, but I've no desire to see it more than once.

I'm taking a break from Criterion to watch my Bond Blu-rays in order. I'm on Goldfinger now. The Blu-ray restorations of these movies are out of this world. The first three Connery movies are all reference quality discs.

I've always loved Dr. No, From Russia With Love, and Goldfinger, because these are Bond movies before the "formula" was established, and they're all pretty faithful to the Fleming novels.

Not really Criterion-related, except that I wonder if we'll see a Blu-ray of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold one day.

Sorry, but the whole anti-erotic thing about it didn't work for me, because I'd find it erotic if he was washing dishes for the entirety of it. (I mean, honestly...)

I mean, I 'get' it, but I just had a different reaction.

In the Realm of Senses however, was incredibly effective and memorable in portraying some seriously destructive obsession. I loved it...but even more so than Salo, I find it difficult to visit it again because of just how uncomfortable it is. One of the most uncomfortable films I can think of.
