I liked Shame a lot better than Hunger, to be honest.

Shame is definitely a raw film about sex addiction and how it can take its toll on a person. Every movie makes it look pleasurable, even in the darkest times, but this film makes a long lasting impression.

It can be a very serious disease and McQueen tackles it nicely.

I loved the end of the film. It definitely makes the viewer question what is going to happen and nothing is wrong with that!

I'm taking a break from Criterion to watch my Bond Blu-rays in order. I'm on Goldfinger now. The Blu-ray restorations of these movies are out of this world. The first three Connery movies are all reference quality discs.

I've always loved Dr. No, From Russia With Love, and Goldfinger, because these are Bond movies before the "formula" was established, and they're all pretty faithful to the Fleming novels.

Not really Criterion-related, except that I wonder if we'll see a Blu-ray of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold one day.

I've been taking a break from Criterion, too. I have a backlog of regular films that I've been watching. I think it was a bad idea for me to start Mad Men because that will probably consume a bulk of my time, just like Criterion did.

My family wants to watch Mad Men, too, so that gives me an incentive to watch regular films during the film and the show at night.

I guess octagon put it better than I did on the previous page. Since for me it was a pleasurable thing, I'm more inclined to find the film superficial in its depiction... and the reason I still find it great is everything about how it looks visually.

I'd be interested in knowing how you react to Mad Men. I know you posted about loving the start, but I wonder if you'll like it more later on or if your interest will start to fade...it seems to go either way with most fans.

For me I feel the quality has significantly declined after season 4, for other fans it's at the best it's ever been right now.

You are correct, shortmartin, about Bresson's minimalist approach to film making. I really like his style. For anyone who likes Bresson, A Man Escaped, is a must-see. I believe it is also a great place to start exploring his films.

For classic cinema, I thought that the white cover for Last Year at Marienbad was beautiful. (I have the original release with the graphic cover).

The original Marienbad looks fantastic because it's embossed, but the replacement cover... not nearly as nice.

I thought Army of Shadows and Chungking Express were pretty neat. I just wish they went with something like this for Bande a part :

Fantastic film. You can almost feel the pressure in the atmosphere. It's suffocating.
