I continue to cross my fingers for a Criterion release (or at least something comparable) for La Dolce Vita. My hopes arent too high though.

The cinematography is simply incredible. The entire film is shot with a lush yellow and brown filter. The cast, led by Daniel Auteuil, is also fantastic. (Monica's outfits are also the very definition of style).

Above all, however, the film has a superb soundtrack. It is hands-down the best one I've heard in over 15 years, and I pay close attention to these things Courtesy of French composer Bruno Coulais, who also did that very atmospheric score for The Crimson Rivers.

Top film, really. Modern neo-noir at its best!

There is a nice French Blu-ray release, courtesy of TF1, but it is not English-friendly. You could pick up the R2 DVD. It is very, very good.

Oh! Looks and sounds pretty good. I'm in the same boat as you when I generally think remakes are terrible, but if one is good like you say, I'll be giving it a watch!

Is it available in the US or just the UK?

I haven't seen Richard III around yet. Has anyone picked it up?

Amazon emailed me that my copy of Pierrot Le Fou has shipped. I'll find out soon if the "Like New" used copy is really like new. At any rate, I cannot wait. This will be good enough to interrupt my chronological sequence of James Bond Blu-rays this weekend if I receive it in time.

Owl, are you posting your thoughts on each individual film on the Bond thread? I'd be curious to hear your take as I've been planning on cracking open my set too.

Not yet, but I probably should. For now, I'll just say that I've seen the first five Sean Connery movies a million times over in other formats, and they look vastly superior on these Blu-rays than they've ever looked before.

I actually have the individual 50th Anniversary Blu-rays of all these Bond movies, since I knew that I would revisit them frequently, and I don't want to open up a box set each time. The actual discs are identical, though.

I'm not a big fan of the box set. The discs get scratched easy from sliding them out

I haven't seen them all since Middle/high school, so it should be a treat once I choose to begin my journey

One of the most notable actors in the collection, Max von Sydow, turned 84 today!

Am I correct in assuming that Salo, In the Realm of the Senses, and Antichrist are the most potentially discomforting films in the Criterion Collection due to certain kinds of content? I revisited these three films in the past couple of weeks, and found all of them to be beautiful and disturbing in their own ways. For me, Antichrist is an excellent movie, and the other two feel like they exist in another category altogether.
[Show spoiler] Especially the final scene of Senses, and the prolonged pointless brutality of Salo.

Are there other movies in the collection that are on the level of these when it comes to disturbing or discomforting content, or is it basically these three, and then other movies (e.g., Black Moon) are truly challenging and unnerving in other ways? Thanks for any insights.

Done!

Not much to my reviews, and I repeat myself quite a bit because I went through them rather quickly, but it's sort of tough to review perfection, which is basically what the first five Blu-ray transfers of the first five Connery films really are.

Really? Because i have yet to hear of any scratched disc issues with any of the box-sets of that kind.

The 1922 version of Nosferatu is still my favorite vampire film of all time.
Don't forget, a triple feature.

1922 Nosferatu
1979 Nosferatu (English version)
1979 Nosferatu (German version)

Since the English and German versions were cut using alternate language takes, the movies, in effect, are slightly different.

True that. I'll happily raise this to a triple feature.

I have the DVD set as well, but these movies would all look downright incredible on Blu-ray.

Thanks for letting us know, iScottie. He is my favorite Bergman actor. I hope he has many years ahead of him.
