I watched GATE OF HELL last night and it looks like a million bucks.

I do have to say that I was mildly put-off by some of the translations in the subtitles. There seems to be a trend that I've noticed in several films recently to use "internet colloquialisms" (for lack of a better term).

I was surprised to see the term "wanna" used instead of the proper English "want to".

Perhaps I'm just old school. Back in the stone age, I was taught that written English should be more structurally formal than casual conversation.

The use of casual slang translation seems out of place for a classic foreign language film. And I also noticed some odd contractions such as "what're" used in place of "what are".

Here is my guess list . . .

Lord of the Flies
Devil's Backbone
Tess
Thief

Three new spines and an upgrade, and I'd be in for all of these.

Get them while you can!

If you enjoy espionage, WWII history, and minimalism-driven edge-of-your-seat cinema, then you are doing yourself a considerable disservice if you neglect to see Melville's Army of Shadows.

It's the best Blu-ray in my entire collection. At least until Le Samourai shows up in the format.

Badlands or Days of Heaven?

I watched both of these films back-to-back this week. It was my first time with both. I loved them. But in terms of my personal preference, I rank Badlands much higher. For me, it is an absolute top-shelf film of the first order. I came away from Badlands thinking that it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. And while I loved Days I don't have that same gut feeling.

Realizing that there is a progression between these two, where Days of Heaven is the more stylistically Malick of the films, my preference for Badlands perhaps reflects a bias for the less elliptical, perhaps more accessible of the two. And yet, as the wonderful Criterion booklet notes, Badlands already contains seeds of the more mature style, and indeed what I loved so much about Badlands was precisely this quality of it being like a fairy tale. Spacek is great, and Sheen is just too cool. I love it when she says
[Show spoiler]that he looks like James Dean, a nifty meta comment that brought back images of the famous car racing scene in Rebel Without a Cause.
In this sense, Badlands has much in common with Targets, which I was glad to see is one of our most wanted upgrades.

Waiting for To the Wonder to come to my local theater.

Another thing to note . . . related to a string of postings on this forum from several weeks ago . . . there was a discussion about the "Magic Hour," lighting, and cinematography. In the Criterion booklet for Days of Heaven there is a nice piece by the cinematographer (Almendros, though apparently Wexler did some fine work for this film, too) in which he discusses their wide-ranging and complex use of "Magic Hour" lighting. Quite illuminating, literally.

I have to pick Badlands out of the two, although Days of Heaven is a beautiful and brilliant work of cinema.

Most directors never come anywhere close to hitting a home run over the upper deck like Malick did with Badlands, and it says a lot that Malick hit another one out of the park with Days of Heaven to a slightly lesser extent, and then created more masterpieces in later decades.

Seems like I do this every week, but I don't mind.

The Tree of Life
The Thin Red Line
Days of Heaven
The New World
Badlands

I think Badlands is his worst by a pretty wide margin. I need to see The New World and Days of Heaven again, as I've only seen them once.

Knights of Cup is rumored to premiere at Cannes.

If these were true I would just piss myself right here.
me too, we could have a contest.

And no love for Gummo? If they're going to put spine numbers on Spring Breakers and Kids, then I'd love a Gummo release too. A box set would be the ideal.

I give the edge to Days of Heaven. For the longest time I considered it to be the most visually beautiful movie I'd ever seen. Then I saw The Tree of Life. Now I waver between the two.

Also, while I love both movies' respective voiceovers, I give a slight advantage to Linda Manz in Days of Heaven. Just preference... It might be the accent.

I would be completely ecstatic if your guess list materializes.

Thanks to myka22 for the Army of Shadows heads up. Thought I was out of luck on that one.

About the Badlands and Days of Heaven discussion I have to choose the later. Love Badlands but Days of Heaven is totally hypnotic every time I see it. Never cease to be blown away by the beauty of that movie. Big Gere fan also. How about a Criterion blu of American Gigolo?

yes, yes, yes! Schrader is an absolute fav, as a writer and a director. I love Mosquito Coast, just revisited it a couple of weeks ago. Blue Collar would also make a worthwhile and compelling release from the Schrader catalog.

Terrence Malick is one of the few directors that I can not rank his films. They each have an unique story. There are slight stylistic changes. The cinematography in his films are always fantastic. All his film scores or soundtracks to his movie are close to perfection. Sorry, like I mentioned before, it is difficult, for me at least, to rank them subjectively and, even worse, objectively.

Everything I see someone ranking his films, it is entirely different from the previous one. I highly recommend watching all his films. To me they are all equal in greatness. Everyone has their favorite Malick film.

I can not wait to watch To Wonder.

I plan on it this weekend. I just wish Malick's preferred cut was the cut on Blu.
