Perhaps an extra on the eventual Eraserhead release?

"The Short Films of David Lynch are now available on the Criterion Collection Hulu Plus channel."

I can definitely rank Jean-Pierre Melville's films. Now that some of his titles are going OOP, I will give it a shot:

Le Samourai and Bob le Flambeur tie for his best film

Army of Shadows
Le Cercle Rouge
Leon Morin, priest
Le Silence de la mer
Un Flic
Le Doulos
Le Deuxième Souffle
Les Enfants terribles

There are three more films I have not seen Quand tu liras cette lettre,
Deux hommes dans Manhattan and L’Aîné des Ferchaux

His best films, in my opinion, have not been released on blu ray yet.

I put the order in almost 2 weeks ago, they had a $10 off $50 coupon, it may have expired, but Deep Discount dropped the prices of both to $27 a little while ago

Badlands has the better "story." Days of Heaven, the better photography. As an overall film goes, I'd say Badlands. Days of Heaven is my least favorite Malick, and even then it's still a masterpiece.

It's ironic that you say that, because Malick's 2 inspirations were Andrew Wyeth's painting "Christina's World" —

— and Edward Hopper's painting "House by the Railroad", which was also Hitchcock's inspiration for the Bates' house.

Also of interest, (according toIMDB) the screenplay is loosely based on the Milady back story featured in "The Three Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas père. In the Dumas novel, Milady was originally born Anne de Bueil and became a thief with her lover, a priest who had renounced his orders. On the run, they pretend to be brother and sister and hide in a village. She ends up seducing and marrying for her own interests the local nobleman.

Maybe the house, but certainly not the beautiful shot

I hope more people realize how brilliant Malick is while he's alive. Same for Kiarostami, Scorsese, Woody, etc.

These guys won't be around forever. I know I sometimes complain 'they don't make 'em like they used to' but these guys deliver more often than not.

Thanks for the background story to Days of Heaven. The only Alexandre Dumas book I have read is The Count of Monte Cristo.

Bwaaawaaaawaaaa. I've read The Three Musketeers several times, and I cannot believe that I did not make this connection to Days of Heaven. One does not readily think of the Dumas novel while watching Days of Heaven. Thinking about it now, though, it's spot-on.

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas is my all-time favorite novel. The unabridged version with the vampire lore, lesbian references, recreational drug use, and all of that.

What about written English dialogue though? Should written dialogue be more structurally formal than the casual conversations it conveys?

I absolutely hate when people write 'could of' instead of 'could've/could have'. It drives me nuts. But it shows up in novels all the time. Even Dashiel Hammett used it in dialogue.

Whattayagonnado.

I do have to say that I was mildly put-off by some of the translations in the subtitles. There seems to be a trend that I've noticed in several films recently to use "internet colloquialisms" (for lack of a better term).

I was surprised to see the term "wanna" used instead of the proper English "want to".

The UK subs are definitely a bit different than the US. "Arse" is a common one...can't picture a Japanese citizen falling on their "arse".

One of my favorite paintings! I had this print hanging on my wall for many years ... before I ever knew it was famous. I just liked it. It got "lost" on one of my many apartment-to-apartment moves 20+ years ago. Thanks for bringing back the memory. Love it!

Do I watch it now or wait 2 weeks to see it in a theatre...hmmm...theatre methinks.
I would say in a movie theatre, the movie looks like it is going to be a visual feast. Seeing on a 55" or 60" screen probably will not do it justice and as Sheldon Cooper said "Once a mind has been pre-blown it can not be re-blown"

Yeah, what's up with that?

Army of Shadows, Last Year at Marienbad and Le Cercle Rouge were all over $100 the other day. I was quite proud of myself for snagging them at the last minute at a reasonable price, but it looks like they came back down.

amazon will often get a final shipment from some source; it usually happens each time titles go OOP, but they will be gone soon.
