I was commenting on someone else guessing those. Gummo is my favorite of Harmony Korine's movies. Anything from him on blu-ray, let alone criterion, would make my month, A box set would be the greatest release of the year!

Sissy Spacek was, and always will be, the ultimate Carrie.

I disliked Brian De Palma's stylistic choices for that Stephen King adaptation, though, and I'm placing a bet that the upcoming remake of Carrie will be a better movie overall. Chloë Grace Moretz does not seem quite as believable as a high school outcast, but the previews look promising, because
[Show spoiler]they show Carrie destroying the entire town. In the Brian De Palma version, Carrie killed some people at the prom, overturned a vehicle with her mind, and then went home. This remake looks as though there's going to be no shortage of awesome destruction.

Anatomy of a Murder, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Rosemary's Baby, and The Game Blu-Rays were all $19.99 at a Costco here in the Seattle area.

Incidentally, the Best Buy down the street is almost dead now.

I walked in there a few days ago, and their Blu-ray displays have been downsized at least 50%, along with the music section. They had Anatomy of a Murder, Rosemary's Baby, and some Wes Anderson Criterion movie, but that was all.

It's a sad affair. I remember when Best Buy first opened during the mid-1990s and you could practically find every movie and every CD ever released there.

If you're looking for turquoise glitter tiger-stripe iPhone cases, though, you're probably in the right place.

She was also great in Lynch's criminally underrated The Straight Story.

I really liked her in Blast from the Past. I know it's not really remembered by people, but I actually think its one of the better non-Woody Allen romantic comedies.

As well as in Missing, 3 Women, Crimes of the Heart and Coal Miner's Daughter, for which she won an Oscar. Tremendous actress.

+1 Coal Miners Daughter and 3Women. I haven't seen the other two, but I've been meaning to.

Hello Jack,

You should do whatever it takes to track down a copy of Mafioso. It is an outstanding piece of satire, on par with Pietro Germi's Divorce Italian Style. Fantastic Alberto Sordi

I would also like to recommend Alberto Lattuada's Venga a prendere il caffe da noi a.k.a Come Have Coffee With Us. Wonderful DVD release, from a new resto. Also included is a terrific booklet with excellent writing on the film and Mr. Lattuada's legacy. I posted some photos a while ago here:

Venga a prendere il caffe da noi DVD

I hope you enjoy it

Also with the great Alberto Sordi, De Sica's Il Boom. It is out through Canal in the UK. This film never had a good English-friendly release. This release uses a new transfer from a very nice resto. The film is as sharp and witty as Mafioso. The beautiful Gianna Maria Canale is in it.

IL Boom DVD

Quote:
Giovanni (Alberto Sordi) lives far beyond his means to provide for his wife's bodily needs (Gianna Maria Canale). Nearly insolvent and terribly worried at the idea of losing his wife, he thinks of committing suicide when an ad gives him hope again: a rich man offers anyone able to give him one of his eyes a big amount of money.

A sad affair indeed. The tiger-stripe bit is hilarious and so true.

There are def advantages to our mobile online culture, but it can also be a bit much.

I'm nostalgic for those nineties days when things were things and places places. As much as I like shopping online, and have my wish lists and carts, I still like going to places to buy music and movies. Luckily, there are some good local retailers here in St. Louis, where they have good customer service and you can have some good, stimulating, informative conversations, with the employees, other customers, fans, and collectors (like the conversations on this forum).

Much of my family lives in Austin, TX, and so when I visit there I'm also drawn to the several local shops, like Waterloo, where the Criterions get a nice big section. I love going to Waterloo Records and just browsing. They have (new and used) copies of nearly every Criterion, including a whole section devoted to BDs. Another of my favorite things about Austin is that there are some local video stores where you can still go in, browse videos for a while, and rent one. Amid the on-demand culture, this ritual is something that I love doing and boy will I miss it when it's gone, if that does happen.

glitter tiger-stripe cell phone cases . . . hilarious.

Wonderful news Arkadin, thanks for the heads-up! Just the thing needed to brighten a wet, gloomy, west coast day! Ordered Léon on the 5th and have been checking e-mails for a week, waiting for the dreaded cancellation notification~ but it's now showing as shipping on the 15th! Would have made the effort to order this long ago if I'd taken the time to look at the you-tube clips, particularly the wonderfully transcendant confessional scene. Called my wife in, who actually spent eight years in service in another lifetime, to watch that and she was quite moved and as intrigued as I was to watch it in it's entirety.

Thanks also, again, Fellini912.

Since Amazon now has these Criterion OOP titles back in stock, I cancelled my Amazon Canada and B&N orders of Le Doulos and ordered these from Amazon US instead:

-Le Doulos
-Last Year at Marienbad
-Mafioso

Looking forward to watching them all. I can hear my wallet crying in the hallway though..

That's how I feel, but its my own damn fault. Of the newly announced, the only two I didn't have were Le Doulos and Mafioso, but I also have ordered other OOP titles: Nights of Cabiria and Diary of a Country Priest.

I'm tempted to sleep with one eye open in case my wallet should come for me!

I'm surprised with the success of Spring Breakers that a blu ray of Gummo hasn't been announced.
