The Studio Canal release of it is Region Free...and it after looking at the 2 on dvdbeaver, they look almost identical (save a few scenes).

Thanks a lot for posting about the 25% off promo code.
I knew there was a reason I was waiting on ordering the OOP titles.
Just got 6 of them for under $100!

Also might pre-order a lot of the upcoming blus with this code, will probably make the prices lower than Amazon, plus it will get me even closer to the $500 mark!

Just checked...and you can get the 4 March releases for $21.06 cheaper from Criterion + 25% then from Amazon.

Where's this Kino sale you speak of? Didn't notice anything online at BN.com if that's what you were talking about. Does it end before next week when Fallen Angels comes out?
Buy.com has been put a lot of the Kino box sets on eBay this past week (buy it now). I've been going crazy with them... Kino's rarely go on sale and are typically expensive!

Last one for the night - "Potentially on Blu by the end of 2012" perspective - Spine #'s 51-100. Again, disregarding OOP titles and Blu already officially released/announced (w/ street date).

51 - Brazil - Already had a DVD re-release, so possible. Some chance that Universal will keep it for themselves, but I tend to think they like this one being with Criterion.
56 - The 39 Steps - UK release already out. Probable.
57 - Charade - Already had a DVD re-release, so possible. Some chance that Universal will keep it for themselves, but I tend to think they like this one being with Criterion.
59 - The Night Porter - probably not a priority; less likely
60 - Autumn Sonata - probably not a priority; less likely
61 - Monty Python's Life of Brian - Already released by Sony; never
62 - The Passion of Joan of Arc - Possible
63 - Carnival of Souls - probably not a priority; less likely
65 - Rushmore - Some minor positive outlooks have been given on Facebook regarding more Anderson films on Blu; possible
70 - The Last Temptation of Christ - Some chance that Universal will keep it for themselves, but I tend to think they like this one being with Criterion. Also only major Scorsese they have access to. Possible.
71 - The Magic Flute - probably not a priority; less likely
72 - Le million - probably not a priority; less likely
73 - Cléo from 5 to 7 - Already had a DVD re-release, but apparently did not sell that well; less likely
74 - Vagabond - Already had a DVD re-release, but apparently did not sell that well; less likely
75 - Chasing Amy - Already released by Disney; never
76 - Brief Encounter - UK release already out. Probable.
77 - And God Created Woman - probably not a priority; less likely
79 - W.C Fields: 6 Short Films - probably not a priority; less likely
80 - The Element of Crime - probably not a priority; less likely
82 - Hamlet - UK release already out. Probable.
84 - Good Morning - probably not a priority; less likely
85 - Pygmalion - Technically OOP and "replaced" by Essential Art House release; less likely
86-88 - Eisenstein: The Sound Years - Given their problems in getting help from Russian archives the last several years, outlook not good; unlikely
89 - Sisters - probably not a priority; less likely
90 - Kwaidan - Remastered re-release long in the works. Definite.
91 - The Blob - probably not a priority; less likely
92 - Fiend without a Face - probably not a priority; less likely
93 - Black Narcissus - Remastered re-release long in the works. UK release already out. Definite.
94 - I Know Where I'm Going! - probably not a priority; less likely
95 - All That Heaven Allows - Possible
96 - Written on the Wind - Possible
97 - Do the Right Thing - Already released by Universal; never
98 - L'avventura - Possible
100 - Beastie Boys Video Anthology - Some (if not all) shot on SD video, I believe; unlikely

To recap 51-100:

Definite - 2
Probable - 3
Possible - 8
Less Likely - 16
Unlikely - 3
Never - 3

To clarify, I'd rate the % chance (when compared to other Criterion titles coming out on blu) of these designations as:

Definite - 99%
Probable - 51%
Possible - 20%
Less likely - 10%
Unlikely - 3%
Never - 0%

I think this is unlikely for a while. Berlin Alexanderplatz takes up six discs plus a seventh of extras, and I'm not sure a single title with seven 50GB Blu-ray Discs is a practical move for such a small distributor until the format becomes more widely-used.

Amazon is charging just over $40 for the same set right now.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the appeal of this set is in the nature of the films and their sexual content. I know I'll get flack for it, and maybe some will even go "on the defensive" as they say, but I haven't seen buzz like this for an Eclipse release since Early Bergman, Postwar Kurosawa, or, at a stretch, Nikkatsu Noir. I think many feel that these Oshima films will not see a better presentation for several years, if ever (although one could say this about many Eclipse sets), and therefore Eclipse 21 has piqued the curiosity of many fans (myself included) who would otherwise not bother purchasing a feature-only DVD box set in 2010.

It will be my first Eclipse set.

I'm not sure about this one. Criterion seems to like putting out Bergman about as much as they like putting out Kurosawa (which is great for me because I love both directors).

Also, I thought there was some mention on Facebook or something that another Bergman would see a blu release this year - many were speculating Fanny and Alexander.

I would think Autumn Sonata or Cries and Whispers would both be interesting choices for a blu release given the use of color. (Personally, I'd prefer Wild Strawberries).

captveg,
have you accounted for the studio canal titles that they want to release themselves instead of through Criterion? just sayin, i dunno which titles they are.

edit: http://www.criterion.com/current/pos...thless-is-back
Breathless being re-released and LINKED on their front page means it'll be coming to BD =) it's only a matter of time.

edit2: i used the AFS code on Yojimbo/Sanjuro BD Set and it came to 41.97 SHIPPED! =)

I'm hoping Criterion can acquire PERSONA from MGM and release on blu-ray.

Wouldn't that conflict with the StudioCanal Collection which includes "Breathless" on BD?

Well talking for myself, you are going out on a limb, because I want the set mainly for one title called "Japanese Summer: Double Suicide" that I have been curious about for a while. Doesn't have anything to do with "sexual content" since you can find that stuff in better places. But hey some people probably are buying it for that reason, so I don't know.

So that means StudioCanal does not own the rights for "Breathless" in the US, other than it was the case with "Pierrot le fou"?

I think Criterion's deal for "Breathless" comes from Rialto.

Yeah I saw that on CriterionForum. Thanks ccfixx.

Right now I am deciding on which Eclipse to get first when I pre-order Bigger Than Life, either the Late Ozu first or the Nikkatsu Noir.

Yes. None of those I listed are StudioCanal licensed.

If Breathless is StudioCanal licensed I expect it will eventually go OOP, which means it unlikely for a BD release from Criterion, IMO. However, if it is Rialto licensed it probably has a really good chance at a Blu release.

----------

As for Autumn Sonata, this seems to me to be considered "lesser" Bergman. I would expect them to release one of his more popular films (Fanny and Alexander, or even Wild Strawberries) on Blu before this one. But they could surprise me.
