Lord of the Flies!
Devil's Backbone!

Definitely in for those two. What a great month!

BestBuy's website says Repo Man will be $35 tomorrow. Surely it'll be cheaper than that on release date, right?

The Lord of the Flies DVD is 13 years old and anything but fine.

Wait for a deal? This the July slate...most of them will be half-price on day one

And it's a pretty good slate, too.

Four definites and Babette's Feast is an interesting maybe. I'm not sure all four of the definites will be July pickups though. My shopping list is getting pretty long.

Unless there are some not so obvious rights issues, it is beyond disappointing to see that Jules and Jim is yet to come to North America. The French Blu-ray release is wonderful.

There is a very good transfer for Malle's The Murmur of the Heart. Also disappointing that this film is missing here. It is Malle's best.

Lastly, the double Spanish set with The Spirit of the Beehive should be essential addition to the Criterion collection. It includes El Sur. Again, unless there are rights issues, I would love to see these films made available to North American viewers.

I am hoping Jules et Jim will upgrade when Criterion releases The Soft Skin. It has been a 4 years since The Last Metro was released on Blu ray. They really need to step up on the Truffaut films.

Pro-B,
I too am disappointed that Jules & Jim and Spirit of the Beehive don't have regionA blu ray releases. Wee need more Truffaut!

I haven't seen El Sur, any good?

No, that'll be their price unless you match amazon's $28 in-store.

Spirit of the Beehive was discreetly re-released in new packaging this January so it doesn't seem like Criterion is interested in upgrading it right now, sadly. I've held off of the Spanish set for this long already, to see what supplements Criterion will offer so I might as well wait a bit longer

Yes, El Sur is definitely worth seeing (and owning). Hopefully it comes here soon so that you could all get a chance to see it. I don't remember it being released on DVD here.

I was only asking cause my BBY usually has brand new releases for a couple dollars cheaper than what the sticker says on it. Price matching slipped my mind. Looks like I'll be picking it up.

The synopsis on Wikipedia sounds interesting. I'm always on the lookout for a good Spanish language film.

This is a bit OT but bear with me...

In keeping with my new Announcement Day policy I'm going to put in an Amazon.uk order soon and I noticed some really good prices on the BFI Flipside releases.

I've read a few reviews but am pretty unfamiliar with all of the titles. Right now I'm thinking of taking a flier on Primitive London, London in the Raw, Herostratus and The Bedsitting Room.

If anybody wants to warn me off any of these or point me to other BFI Flipside titles now would be a good time.

Thanks.

It's probably been said multiple times, but Devil's Backbone at spine #666? Nice.

Backbone. Spine 666. Devil's Backbone.

Yeah, but unfortunately this one wasn't advertised (though I think it would probably be carried in stores still). So price-matching sounds best even though the price is a little higher than I'd hoped. Amazon already shipped mine, so too late to regret that now.

I was going to argue that there are a lot of things that should never hit BD, but managed to hit DVD, but that still proves your point. Let's just say there are plenty of films that were barely worthwhile on DVD, and putting them on BD isn't going to make them any better. I've yet to find a Criterion title that falls into this category though.

Deep End should be a must have, right?

I blind bought about 9 titles on Friday, so I'm right there with you.

When Pink Flamingos gets a spine, get back to me.

If DVDs are "perfectly fine", why do you even buy blu-rays?
