Wow...something similar with me. Netflix led me to Ozu...Ozu lead me to Naruse and Naruse led me to Mizoguchi. I had originally only liked his later films, dealing with post war Japan, women eeking out livings as prostitutes (ie. his Fallen Women Eclipse set), but finally discovered his great period films like Ugetsu and Life of Oharu. Tanaka was a great actress and just continued to prove that in Oyu-Sama.

PS...I picked up Kurosawa on the route...really like his post war films especially!

I'm pumped about Repo Man, but I'm going to wait until I get another coupon from Barnes & Noble, because I prefer to check out the condition of the digipak Criterions before I purchase them.

No hurry, because I still have nine more James Bond Blu-rays left to revisit, but I'm guessing that B&N will send another 20% email sometime in late April.

Kurosawa is mostly known for his samurai/western like type movies. Very know what little treasures of movies he made between 1940-49. They are not epic in scale but such wonderful movies to watch

It's a Wonderful Life is Frank Capra's greatest film, however several fans prefer Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. I can see Criterion Collection releasing that film.

By the way, I really liked To the Wonder, I think it's a more dichotomous, fluid and cryptic (in a good way) work than critics and audiences are giving it credit for. I think many are misinterpreting several key scenes and lines of dialogue. Upon further inspection, I suspect they'll realize that the luminous images coupled with contrapuntal narration offer something more complex than a " perfume ad" or an actor's "vanity project."

Interesting, Mafioso is now showing in stock April 18 at amazon via newbury Comics. Hopefully true! Perhaps some of the Melville Blurays will come back as well
