Can anyone explain why Criterion just announced to release some new titles with a 2K transfer and other new titles with a 4K transfer?

It'd be great if Criterion got their hands on more "mainstream," studio classics like they did with On the Waterfront. So many (like these Capras) haven't seen the light of Blu!

The lack of Capra on Blu-ray is strange, yes some have been release but where is Mister Deeds Come's To Town, Mister Smith Goes To Washington, Pocketfull Of Miracles....

I couldn't find Naked Lunch there last week either. I ended up going to my local record store. They usually have new Criterions, thankfully.

Years ago, I bought Criterion movies exclusively from a local independent record store. The store had every single Criterion DVD on the shelf, and the clerks all had enough knowledge about the movies to recommend specific favorites.

I have some great memories of buying Criterion DVDs from the record store about nine or ten years ago and shooting the breeze with the clerks while cool music from Wilco, Sonic Youth, and the like played on the speakers. I credit that store (Criminal Records in Atlanta) with helping me become enthused about Criterion movies years ago. I remember how stoked the clerks were about the release of Videodrome, and about how everyone was raving about the videocassette-style DVD case.

Like most of the better independent record stores, this particular store had to ensure its survival by selling movies, comic books, and limited-edition toy collectibles along with records and CDs, so Criminal Records was, and still is, basically a place where fun people with fun tastes go to hang out.

The store always had a mix of Criterion movies and cult classics (gory Italian zombie movies, grindhouse, 1970s teenage hitchhiker flicks, etc.). In short, I always had a blast sifting through the films.

The Blu-ray stock there is not quite as prominent these days, but the chance that they'll have Repo Man there today is roughly 100%.

My record store memory will always be the first time I went into the Tower Records store in the university district in Seattle a dozen or so years ago. Their selection was dazzling~ I think they had every DVD that had been issued to that point. Walked out clutching six or eight treasures including McCabe and Mrs. Miller and Summer of '42 and a copy of Lena Horne's Stormy Weather, which featured perfornances by Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Ada Brown and others, as well as the wonderful Ms. Horne, which I haven't seen anywhere before or since. Do I have to mention that any of these would be a great criterion release!

Again, that's assuming the 50's public-domain Hal Roach prints they used were on film or broadcast-TV masters. If the latter, not much chance, without going back and looking up the old film shorts from scratch.
