[QUOTE=ElliesDad;7425203]My record store memory will always be the first time I went into the Tower Records store in the university district in Seattle a dozen or so years ago. Their selection was dazzling~ I think they had every DVD that had been issued to that point. Walked out clutching six or eight treasures including McCabe and Mrs. Miller and Summer of '42 and a copy of Lena Horne's Stormy Weather, which featured perfornances by Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Ada Brown and others, as well as the wonderful Ms. Horne, which I haven't seen anywhere before or since. Do I have to mention that any of these would be a great criterion release!

I would love to see Summer of '42 make its way to Criterion (bluray).

They haven't had anything new since Badlands and The Blob, including Monsieur Verdoux even though they've had all the other Chaplins.

I'm waiting for 5 more rz points to get my RZ cert and then I'll pricematch Amazon and order NL, GOH & RM.

Just rewatched In the Realm of the Senses. I'm always amazed at how assured and effective Oshima's direction is. Is the commentary worth a listen?

Thank you, after missing out on sooo many over the past year or so i have landed a couple i wanted in a row.

Not sure if you saw them, but i was tempted by the Glow in the Dark print even though i don't care for the busier posters as much.

I'm a big Arsenic and Old Lace fan but It Happened One Night seems like a much better fit. If they have to have a Capra (and that's not a slap at Capra) that's probably the best fit.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance would be fantastic. John Ford, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and a who's who of character/supporting actors.

There hasn't exactly been a flood of Paramount titles finding their way to Criterion but Rosemary's Baby leave at least a little room for hope.

+1 on both.

I forgot Capra directed Arsenic and Old Lace.

Amazon still hasn't even shipped my copy of Repo Man, so I'm not expecting it until Thursday or Friday now. Glad I wasn't going to have time to watch it tomorrow anyway.

Looking at this cover in person for REPO MAN, can anybody really say that this is not one of Criterions best covers yet?

Whenever Leon Morin Priest is no longer available, I'll have a copy for sale. I purchased my copy from a Marketplace seller (large vendor) back on March 29 and it still isn't here two weeks later. I just went ahead and ordered one from Amazon directly, just in case the first one never shows.

Amazon just shipped Le Doulos and Mafioso. Last Year at Marienbad is still not in stock but I'm so glad I got at least these since they were the ones I wanted the most anyway.

...

Nor does Melville shy away from showing us the sheer muscular power of faith. Morin is a shoe leather priest; he doesn't just sermonize and pontificate, he is an intellectual man with a physical presence wielding rapier-sharp reason and disarming charm and humility to pull his charges to their feet and challenge them to look at the spiritual world around them in a time when God is not so much in evidence in France, or in the rest of the world for that matter. He is also a man who struggles with his human desires, who fights to remain true to his higher calling. He is young, handsome, desireable; women find him attractive not least because he is one of the few young men left in town and ultimately unattainable. Melville makes us realize just how much courage and strength is required to walk in Morin’s shoes. Whether or not one chooses to believe, Melville makes us see it, feel it, and respect it. Leon Morin, Priest is a testament to man and his capacity for faith, and the more I watch it, the more I think it is Melville’s deepest, most layered, and best film.

I appreciate the thoughtful perspective you have on the film, but I find myself at odds with your diagnosis. Cheers, mate.
All in on this one with you, Dude. I was uncompelled for a long time to check out Leon Morin because a movie about a priest who wants to talk about theology just didn't sound interesting to me. It was close the last Melville I watched, but it's in the top of the ones I like. Like you talk about, the historical setting is unique, and the sublimation of passion in the discussions makes you breathe deeply just for some relief. And the film has incredible humanism; I'm struck that Melville had little to no religious faith but could so clearly see -- and show -- how faith works in the life of someone who believes. I think this film is a huge achievement, and you expressed that very well.

Just finished Repo Man. I pretty much loved everything about the film, but the ending. Haha.

It's currently my favorite cover, but Lord Of The Flies (the new one) is a close second.
