Let me re-take on this, I am unfair on Godard. He is not bad director I think some of his early movies from the 50's and early 60's are interesting, I am not a fan but they are well made. I dislike him however as a person. I've seen too many interviews with him over the years, I dislike his views and him, how he present's himself and while I should be able to overlook this and do with many others for him I just can't get past the fact that he is a douche So I will sometimes say "bad movie" when I mention Godard but it's unfair and not right cause they are not really bad

I actually prefer these from the film-grab website...

[Show spoiler]

I rushed over to the Contempt screenshots, though, because it was the proper thing to do.

I am wondering what documentaries I should grab after I get Repo Man next week.

I own For All Mankind already just was wondering what other documentaries from Criterion are also on Blu-Ray?

Can't the work speak for itself? I'm sure there are directors that are just as obnoxious and overbearing that you like, we just dont have their interviews on record to prove so.

But anyways, I was merely trying to point out that there is no fanclub, because there arent any true Godard fans here. I love the films I've seen from him, but all of them are from his 'Golden Period' (1960 to 1967). What about the countless films he's made since then?

Sans Soleil is a great choice, although it stretches the strict definition of documentary.

Crumb is an essential documentary. It's full of life, tragedy, art and oddities.

To my discredit, the most recent Godard film that I've seen is Weekend.

I don't think there's a strict definition of Documentary. I take them all as fiction, seeing as narratives can be deceitful. Is West of Memphis riveting? yes, but it also leaves out tons of relevant information.

Same here. Maybe Criterion can release the fifty+ films he's released since then in a modestly sized box set

Many of the "documentaries" in recent years strike me as outright fiction. Environmentalist and food activist filmmakers, in particular, could use some guidance in avoiding hyperbole.

I like your point, though, because film documentaries, in general, could be perceived as fiction by nature because the scope of the camera eye is tilted from the filmmaker's individual perspective.

Thank you guys for the suggestions. Was also looking at the life and times of harvey milk too.

On the dvd side I have been considering General Idi Amin Dada.

I love film in general but always have a soft spot for documentaries too.

Another question I had was after seeing 8 1/2 what should be the next Fellini film I get from the collection?(preference to blu-ray but will get a dvd copy if there isn't a blu release)

Definitely. It was disappointing when I finally saw Waiting for Superman, because my God, does that film have very little meat. Just throw in a couple stats so that the audience will be persuaded by sad young faces. Manipulative and poorly researched to say the least.

I Vitelloni is my favorite Fellini film, but it's only available on Criterion DVD so far.

If you're not a Fox News watching, Chic Fil-A eater, YOU should love the film.

I think La Dolce Vita is the next best Fellini.

If you want something more decadent, see Amarcord, and if you want something perversely decadent, see Satyricon.
