I have a basic 5.1 setup and i have to say, the near field mix was one of the most immersive tracks I've ever heard. I've yet to play some of my newer blu rays (Avengers, Skyfall, Django, Zero Dark 30, etc.) but I doubt they will compare.

I'm not much of an audiophile, but since moving my Surrounds closer to me, watching movies at home has never been better. Maybe I'm still riding that high.

By the way, I'm seated to watch Lords of Salem right now

I am not much of an audiophile either. I don't even have surround sound because in my room there isn't much space. But once I get an apartment I will be looking into a surround system.

Well, that's a change of pace. I'm guessing the second of the two reasons was more in play than the first.
I never saw Battlefield Earth, so those comparisons are lost on me.

The fact that Oblivion is helmed by the filmmakers of Tron: Legacy is not lost on me.

Tron: Legacy was a beautifully-filmed movie, but it was ultimately pointless in my eyes. I had the general impression that a bunch of nerds in my generation had decided that it would be a great idea to make a Tron sequel, but forgot that an actual story should come with it. I enjoyed watching it at the theater, because it was an insanely good eye-candy experience, but that's all.

I've heard that Oblivion is a slightly better story than Tron: Legacy, but that it's still a marvelous eye-candy treat. That's all that I'm really expecting.

My brain had a pretty good mental bootcamp workout today at To the Wonder, so I'm cool just to watch an eye-candy science fiction film later this weekend.

Oh, that's easily remedied:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlef...th_(film)#Plot

(In this case, just slip in Morgan Freeman's baddies instead of John Travolta's hairy aliens, the underground slaves instead of the unenlightened cavemen, and Cruise returning to Earth to enlighten his engrams, instead of just wandering out of his cave to have a look. The idea going in was clearly "Now, y'see, it must've been the hairiness that turned audiences off last time...It could still work!")

As for the Tron guy, not sure if he was a card-carrying church member either, probably just picked up on Cruise's pitch.

I spoke to deepdiscount.com about my copy today. They were less than helpful. They told me it must have been Criterion that re-shrink wrapped it in the wrong case, and then offered me a whopping 15% refund.

Okay, maybe not quite that often. I am not sure where to rank To the Wonder on my list of Malick films, but it falls somewhere in the middle. Meaning, of course, that I consider it to be quite a masterpiece.

Malick even makes a Sonic Drive-In look beautiful and majestic in this film. Geez...
I have an HD download of it, so I'm already watching it over and over

There was an interesting article written about how To The Wonder was essentially Malick shooting a ballet, since the characters are almost always in constant motion (and Kurylenko is seen numerous times doing pirouettes):

Costco usually has great prices on everything they sell. I figure they would have more of the ones Best Buy might Carry.

Well the "Tron guy" wrote the Oblivion graphic novel something like 5 years ago then he approached Cruise to play the lead, so I really don't think there is weight there for the assumptions you are trying to make. Have you seen the film though?

I have a random question.

I won a Canadian release of Mystery Train Criterion from an American seller on eBay. Is there any difference from the American release?

Thank y'all!

Couldn't say for sure, but if it's a Criterion release I'd expect it would be THE Criterion release. I haven't heard of Criterion making alternate versions for different territories.

Fun film, though. Very entertaining, off-beat, and sometimes just a bit off-the-wall. Interesting and unusual plot structure, too! Hope you enjoy it!

They are usally the same. Only difference is the price with is usally about $10 more here on Amazon.ca for certain titles and a warning on the site of the movie that the movie is not available for Quebec since they usually have only the English sound or sub titles (but they will still ship them it's just a legal thing to make the silly Quebec laws happy)

Terrence Malick's To the Wonder would make a fine double-feature with the Criterion of Wim Wenders's Paris, Texas.

This crossed my mind a few times while I was in the theater watching the Malick film. Like Paris, Texas, To the Wonder excels at depicting the awkward aspects of human interactions that most films glaze over, whether the awkwardness is comical or tense. The dialogue is minimal in To the Wonder, and it even plays like a silent film of sorts, but the film has that lingering air of characters questioning whether they are saying the right thing or whether or now they should have said something at all.
I just saw To The Wonder, and I have to say, it was truly magnificent. Malick can even make toxic waste look good . I loved Javier Bardem's scenes, there was great truth and a wonderful sadness to them, and how the whole movie had a feeling of melancholy and romantic futility underlying the beauty of the images. Agree 100% with the comparion to Paris, Texas.

I love Mystery Train. I'm fairly new to Jarmusch as well but Mystery Train may be my favorite of the films I've seen. Hope you enjoy it.

Mrs Drbikeshorts and I saw Oblivion a couple of nights ago. Good film.
Sure, it won't set the world on fire and you'll recognise more than a few sci-fi tropes, but nevertheless it's still an enjoyable experience.
I've heard claims that it is emotionally unengaging or cold, but I had no such problems.
