On the subject of contemporary French cinema, I would love Criterion to do its magic on Laurent Cantet's The Class.

I'm pretty sure it's region B...and agreed on the Ebert commentary on the Criterion DVD version. For someone who admittedly said he knew very little about Ozu and that film, he did a very admirable job!

It bothers me at times too. I've exchanged a couple items I've gotten from B&N's site because of reasons like these--creased spines, chipped cases..

On this date in 1953, Henri-Georges Clouzot’s THE WAGES OF FEAR premiered at the Cannes Film Festival: http://www.criterion.com/films/370-the-wages-of-fear

The Kid With A Bike is fantastic. I wasn't really won over by Rosetta, but that's just me. I know a lot of people who like it, but nothing about it was fascinating (except the waffles! ).

There is a chance, but who knows how business arrangements will work out? StudioCanal decided to do something different with their releases and didn't renew the rights with Criterion, but that could change -- I don't know if the current arrangement is working out as they hoped. The Tati releases were OOP on DVD, then Criterion got them back, then Play Time was announced as going OOP again, now Criterion says they have renewed all of their Tatis.

Since Criterion is working with MGM now, I wouldn't be shocked if some of the old Orion releases came back as Criterions at some point (Sid and Nancy, Silence of the Lambs, Spinal Tap).

State holiday today, so I went to see Oblivion at the theater and then picked up The Breakfast Club on Blu-ray with the Best Buy Upgrade & Save. A good day.

Oblivion does not reinvent the wheel, but I quite liked it. It's a very good eye candy experience.

I decided that it's time for a new update of what films I would consider to be favorites, likes, neutrals, and dislikes. Keep in mind that these are just my own personal opinions and I am in no way, shape, or form criticizing the directors or any of the other individuals who worked on these films. I understand that many will disagree with me, but that's the great thing about having unique tastes and personal opinions.

If you folks have any questions or comments about why I like or dislike a certain film, do not hesitate to ask.

Definitions:
  • Favorites: films that I consider to be the best of the best. They have a perfect blend of everything because they are brilliantly written, directed, and produced. They also have fantastic acting and I can see myself watching these movies over and over again.
  • Likes: similar to the favorites, these are films that I consider to be a perfect blend of everything. They do, however, fall short to my expectations or do not have that "wow" factor throughout that I am looking for. They are still excellent and would still get my recommendations.
  • Neutrals: films that have a mixture of elements that I enjoy and elements that I do not enjoy. I neither like nor dislike them.
  • Dislikes: films that I do not enjoy. The acting, storyline, relatability, style, or some other element fell really short for me and I do not see myself watching them again.

Favorites: 12 Angry Men, The 400 Blows, Antichrist, Au Revoir Les Enfants, Badlands, Belle De Jour, Le Cercle Rouge, The Double Life Of Veronique, Down By Law, Fish Tank, For All Mankind, The Great Dictator, The Killing, Lonesome, Monsieur Verdoux, The Night Of The Hunter, On The Waterfront, Revanche, The Silence Of The Lambs (DVD), Three Colors Trilogy (All), Traffic

Likes: 3 Women, The 39 Steps, Anatomy Of A Murder, Army Of Shadows, Bigger Than Life, The Blob (Blu-ray / DVD), Charade, Cronos, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button (Blu-ray / DVD), The Darjeeling Limited, Days Of Heaven, Dazed And Confused, Diabolique, Eating Raoul, The Game, The Gold Rush, La Haine, Hunger, The Kid With A Bike, Kiss Me Deadly, The Lady Vanishes, A Man Escaped, Ministry Of Fear, Modern Times, The Naked Kiss, Paris Texas, La Promesse, Purple Noon, Repo Man, Repulsion, The Royal Tenenbaums (Blu-ray / DVD), The Thin Red Line, The Wages Of Fear

Neutrals: Being John Malkovich, Black Narcissus, Blow Out, Bottle Rocket, Cul-de-sac, Fat Girl, Following, Gomorrah, Island Of Lost Souls, Ivan's Childhood, The Last Days Of Disco, The Last Temptation Of Christ, The Last Year At Marienbad, Leon Morin Priest, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Naked Lunch, Paths Of Glory, Rashomon, Robinson Crusoe On Mars, The Rock (DVD), Rosemary's Baby, Rushmore, Something Wild, Sweet Smell Of Success, Tokyo Drifter, Videodrome, Vivre Sa Vie, Weekend

Dislikes: 8 1/2, Black Moon, Brazil, Design For Living, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Harold And Maude, M, Pale Flower, People On Sunday, Rosetta, The Seventh Seal, Shock Corridor, The Third Man

So I have a non criterion question that I feel the OCD folks on the Criterion board could answer.
I bought the All Quiet on the Western Front digi from a third party seller on Amazon. It was listed as "like new". I was surprised to open it today and see that it was still shrink wrapped, even with stickers.

The issue: the barcode has a mark on the back, carved into the book itself.
I have a history in retail and know what it is, a freebie/demo given to a vendor.

Question: would you rather receive a perfect digi with only this issue or an opened one with some wear and tear. Also, should I report this? Seems shady

I have received these "like new" products before, and, as long as the product is in otherwise mint condition aside from a hole-puncher or mark on the UPC code, I'm good to go, and I would prefer it to one with wear and tear.

It does seem somewhat shady, but, as long as I receive a mint condition product, I would simply let it go and default to "My name's Paul and this is between y'all."

Thanks for sharing your list. I was surprised that we agreed with Les Enfants Terribles being the least favorite. I felt that the characters from the movie or story were uninteresting.

It would be great if the movies that you did not see were more available outside France. Because of that reason, I have not seen any of them.

Neither! That's why, being equally OCD (who on this thread isn't?), I avoid third-party vendors as a personal choice. If you reported it directly to Amazon customer service they would in all likelihood replace it for you directly as a courtesy, but they would be generous in doing so...'like new', which it sounds like it is, is not the same as 'new'.

I would recommend giving the Third Man another chance down the line. Did the plot just not do anything for you? Maybe it's because I'm a history buff that I enjoy the film so much. Haha any regrets picking up the OOP Criterion? I'm glad I rented the film first myself, but the Studio canal blu is good enough for me.

Yes, the plot was very slow paced and the film was just overhyped, in my opinion.

I plan on revisiting it down the road.
