To pose a question on what is potentially the last day before "update discussion" begins.........

Revanche & Hunger

Two newer films that I hadn't seen prior to their release.......

What one do you enjoy more?
What one do you think is a better film?

I thought they were both great, and think Hunger was the better film, which I also enjoyed more. thoughts?

Think I noticed they did a similar major price boost on lots of blu-rays last year around the same time. May have to hold on until Black Friday...

Random tidbit I came across today on AintItCool.com (yes I read AintItCool). Seems Ed Norton is a bit of a Criterion fan. During an interview at SXSW:

"Early in the conversation, Ed brought up Criterion's new release of Roberto Rossellini's War Trilogy of ROME OPEN CITY, PAISAN and GERMANY YEAR ZERO. Asking if I had seen it - which caused me to confess that I had indeed seen it - and that my job in life brings me the particular joy of getting CRITERION DISCS quite early. Ed asked what I'd gotten recently, which caused me to engross him and Tim with the greatness of JAMES MASON in BIGGER THAN LIFE - a film that peels the veneer of the 50's Suburban Household and shows the hurt and dysfunction and battles that lay behind that perfect exterior. In particular - it was a film that Mason produced, which led me to talking about AGE OF CONSENT, another James Mason production."

Doesn't surprise me all that much. I've seen Norton interviews and he seems like a very smart movie guy. Underrated actor too.

The beginning of July 2009 and mid- to late-November 2009. Both lasted two weeks.

enjoyed Revanche much more. Hunger was still a very good film, but Revanche was great IMO.

[Show spoiler] i'm from Ireland, so perhaps I had high expectations (unfair) on Hunger, that it would have had more of a macroscopic view of the IRA conflict. most of the film seemed to be capable of being transplanted into any "prison abuse" scenario, and work. that was perhaps my issue with it: too generic. the long interview scene was great, and did discuss the conflict, but that seemed to be about it.

with Revanche: it just seemed to study the characters so deep, unlike few films i've ever seen. while it was slow to get started, about the 2/3 way mark, it had the momentum of a train. the granddad was the cohesive unit around all characters. the film didnt try too hard. it just showed us the souls of these characters, then shut up and let us form conclusions, which was just an incredible film experience for me.

No, but you can order another replacement case for any of the other discs and then print out a "Ben Button" cover for it. The cover can be found somewhere in this massive thread, I believe.

Unfortunately, I think Marienbad will soon follow. It's a shame because it had been OOP for so long prior to the CC release.

Back to June 2010 releases.

Anyone care to issue some predictions?

My picks:

The Red Shoes
The Leopard
Night Train to Munich
Bicycle Thieves
The Secret of the Grain

There will be only four, so only one of the last two will be selected I think.

Huh? Are we talking about the Michael Douglas movie? I liked it, but it doesn't really seem Criterion worthy.

Criterion originally released the LaserDisc box set that contained the ALT ending/endings I think. It also had commentary tracks.

There hasn't been decent DVD release at all, esp special features except for the UK dvd release.

The Game is one of Finchers best films.

Criterion is updating right now. So far five (4 new) films updated:

519. Close-Up (1990)
520. Everlasting Moments (2008)
521. Mystery Train (1989)
523. Night Train to Munich (1940)
