There is, technically, a fan club that no one participates. It would be great to put some use to it.

I'm in!
I think it would be cool if we give everybody a chance to pick out a movie. Even if we do two a month, I think that would be cool.

If we end up doing 4-5 a month, we should do one from each country.

Not only would it allow us to watch some of our unseen films, but we can get an appreciation for different cultures and styles, as well as learn new things about each movie through the other members.

The Tom Cruise topic has me thinking of his and Jack Nicholson's iconic exchange in A Few Good Men. Frankly, it causes me to whenever I see it. I know, I know! It's famous, right? Everyone can do his Nicholson impression of " You can't handle........" It's just that I see essentially the same scene done in The Caine Mutiny and it's so much better (IMO) in that film because of the subtle vs the over-the-top performances in AFGM. Just my $0.02 from a guy who likes Cruise.

1 a Week sounds cool

We should at least see one subbed for every English language film.

I'd vote for one a fortnight - Again, you have to avoid it being a chore, plus you can still watch the movies that you personally want to watch around it.

Gives you a week to watch it, and then a week for people to discuss.

I have to admit, though, I avoid movies that involve rape, so I would likely skip certain films if they were the ones assigned.
You could create the thread.

Avoiding a couple won't be too bad (Salo, Antichrist, In the realm of the Senses), we'd understand.

We can make our own thread if we get enough people and list the schedule and then post our discussions.

Edit: Oh, and it would allow others to get into The Criterion Collection, as well.

Joseph Cotton
Love the guy. Add me to the Shadow of a Doubt chorus and I'm always absolutely delighted when I stumble across one of his tv appearances (I really wish he could have done a Columbo and the fact that he was in the stage play Prescription: Murder is almost maddening...so close etc etc)

Elevator to the Gallows
Yes please. Day One. Gimme. +1

Eyes Wide Shut
I walked out of the theater really not liking this and it took a few more tries before I kind of made my peace with it. I originally thought the story was a mess and the casting/performances were really strong but over the years I've come to realize that was exactly backwards. Cruise and Kidman were just too pretty to sell the insecurity that was at the heart of everything and I don't think either of them ever really tried.
Another Bob Le Flambeur fan. Overall pretty interesting list both for Melville and Kubrick. Paths of Glory is a great film, but why does it top your list? I am just curious.

How's this for a thread idea?

Quote:
After several of us Criterion Collection forum members talked, we decided that it would be a fun idea to have a "Criterion Film Of The Week".

For each week of a given month, there will be a "Criterion Film Of The Week" that each person can optionally watch. Once watched, each person can post their thoughts and opinions on the film. This will help all of the other members on the forum understand the film a bit better and appreciate the style and other things that are put into each film.

By doing this "Criterion Film Of The Week", hopefully more people will be turned on to The Criterion Collection and will look at more of their catalogue. Not to mention, doing this fun little thing will help some of us members watch through our unseen films

Beginning next week, the week of April 28 - May 4, we will have the first film of the week, as well as the monthly calendar for May.

We hope to see you all participating and engaging in these masterpieces

Yours truly,
The Criterion Club

A few of us will determine it in a PM.

We'll randomly select films from each country and films that seem to best fit the month.

Fair enough. Some type of random system would be fine.
