Well be discussing it at length in May on the Criterion Film of The Week Thread. Hope you'll join us.

I can't remember, I know there has been talk about 25th Hour, but was wondering if there had been rumours/hints at Do the Right Thing coming out on Criterion? I know it's already out via Universal, but CC have re-released a couple of Universal titles in the past, so I couldn't help but wonder.

I hear the Universal release is pretty good so will probably get it anyway.

I actually sent a tweet to Spike Lee the other night asking if there was any more news, but no response

The Universal version has most of the supplements as the Criterion, the big difference is in the color timing. Criterion's DVD has the original theatrical color tones, a bronze tint, the Universal version has a cleaner crisper picture. I doubt Criterion will ever re-release it on blu ray unless the Universal goes OOP.

I think this is the right area to post this in. I'm planning on buying my first Criterion blu in the next week. Anyone have any ideas as to what I should get, or are they all worth buying? I have already seen Salo: 120 Days of Sodom so that is the one title I am probably not going to buy.

Paris, Texas ... based on the strength of the film alone.

Based on looking at the titles you already own, I'd say either On the Waterfront or Rosemary's Baby.

To be honest, I was kinda disappointed in the course as the prof kept confusing me with another student, and would always send me her marks, instead of my own. I also didn't agree with a lot of what she was saying, and thus my marks, when I actually got my own, suffered. We also didn't really do a lot of reading, and focused more on building websites for a trial program they were running that year. My friend, if I'm not mistaken, did do a website and essay on Blow Up. I'll have to ask her on Friday when she calls me.

That class was also my first introduction to DH Lawrence, as we had to read Sons and Lovers. I wasn't a fan of him then, nor did my enjoyment of Lawrence improve after reading the infamous Lady Chatterley's Lover back in February. I find him to be a bit of a bore, and totally unrealistic.
Maybe an English class isn't the best place to discuss Antonioni.

That sounds like it was frustrating. I wouldnt want to hand my 'A's' to anybody else. I only wish my Geotechnical teacher would mistake my name I would be sure to get a better grade.

Anytime something like this happens to me I just think of the Herzog quote.

“Academia is the death of cinema. It is the very opposite of passion. Film is not the art of scholars, but of illiterates.”- Werner Herzog

Yeah, it was a huge disappointment. I need to rewatch Blow Up without the Jungian psychology and bullshit attached to it, and discuss it with people who aren't trying to push some academic theory on it that probably has nothing to do with the film, nor try to compare it to Lawrence.

I've actually had quite a few "English" profs that didn't really teach. For my Literature Appreciation class during my MLIS, we essentially taught ourselves the material, as the prof made us do presentations every class. The literature was excellent (except for Margaret Atwood, I can't stand the woman), but we didn't really learn anything from that prof, as she was more interested in treating us like we were idiots who couldn't write a paragraph to save our lives, and then turn around and mark us as if we were English PhD students. She was another prof who couldn't keep her students straight, as my friend (the same one with all the Criterions who never watches them) spoke up maybe once during the semester, didn't read any of the texts (coles notes only), yet made a higher mark for participation than I did, and I spoke every class, and actually read the bloody books.

Thankfully those two profs didn't kill literature for me, and I did have other, far more awesome and attentive English profs during my university career.

I must of been watching an entirely different movie called "Blow Up", because Antonioni's movie has remotely anything about Jungian psychology or the Oedipal complex. I would love to hear your professor's argument.

Enjoy. Then check out L'Avventura, La Notte*, and L'Eclisse as soon as you can, if not beforehand. At least L'Avventura. Red Desert is really the apex** of a formal progression including them: many consider these a quadrilogy (?) because of their concern with existentialism, alienation, and ennui.

*La Notte is the toughest to find on these shores, streaming or (quality) disc-wise. [Masters of Cinema is releasing a UK blu but I already have their DVD version, there are no extras, and I have an inkling Criterion might have a trilogy box in store]

**I actually consider L'Eclisse to be the fullest expression of Antonioni's form; but Red Desert is in color and features intriguing decisions in sound design so it can be seen as a progressive step formally.

Sad to say, but I'm not going to make it to 100 Criterion's without them all being Blind Buys I've seen Devil's Backbone.

This time I'm coming prepared though. B$N membership and 2 giftcards. And maybe a $9 coffee from the in store barista. Gotta have my energy as I pass by all those paper things in the front.

Lord of the Flies will be my first criterion title. I read the book a few months ago and I have been wanting to watch this movie.
