This, my friend, is why I am "The Great Owl", instead of simply "The Owl."

Actually, I'll admit that I have nostalgic ties to Dune, since it came out when I was in middle school, and after I had just read the Herbert novel.

Yeah, I'd love to see a "good" adaptation of Dune. Maybe Shane Carruth or Neil Blomvkamp coud direct?

At least Dune is better than Oblivion. I'll take incoherent & messy over uninspired any day. The sets alone make a dune a must see.

I saw an Owl yesterday, but he was just merely good.

Fanny and Alexander
The Three Colors Trilogy
12 Angry Men
The Rules of the Game
Rushmore

The first three titles alone make it the best.
I agree that Nov. 2011 has been the best Criterion month IMO. Is the only month that I have all the titles.

David Lynch's Dune is definitely not the most faithful version, but it has an odd charm. I love the casting.

I liked Oblivion, although it was predictable and derivative. It was an amazing eye candy movie, and that's all I was expecting. Just a fun popcorn movie to watch late at night.

Oblivion is my second favorite 2013 movie so far.
(I've only seen two 2013 movies so far, but still...)

Oh yeah, I was rather seduced by its oddness too. I mean come on, that Stimg scene is incredible.

As far as 2013 Olga movies go, at least you got the order right

Would be anxious to hear your take on Pines if you have the chance to see it... Pretty sure they are still screening it at the Midtown Art Cinema.

I'm intrigued by that movie. Might have to pay a visit to Midtown again soon.

Dune is almost over, and I'm about to watch my Blu-ray of Peckinpah's Straw Dogs. I'm going to be one emotionally-scarred dude in the office tomorrow.

I hope you don't like the remake of Straw Dogs as well as that of the The Thing (both 2011).

No. That remake of Straw Dogs was a whale of a fail.

It's hilarious that James Marsden's character is not even a mathematician in the remake, but they still include the scene with him counting in binary. Just a lazy remake in so many ways.

Yeesh.

Just felt like posting the poster, it's definitely one if the greatest:

We absolutely need more Peckinpah in the collection. People would go gaga over Alfredo Garcia.

Straw Dogs was one of the first films I fell in love with many years ago.

I tracked down a brand new DVD copy to a NewburyComics in my state. It was the only copy available as the DVD had gone OOP. It was one of the earliest films that I saw back then and it still holds up to being great in my book.

The remake was absolutely terrible and like Owl stated, was very lazy.

With Criterion and MGM working together, I keep hoping that CC will re-negotiate Straw dogs and release it to blu. Alfredo Garcia would also be very welcome.

Thumbs down

This MGM Straw Dogs edition is a great-looking Blu-ray. One of the most disturbing movies ever is now even more effective.

I would have liked a Criterion Blu-ray, though. I loved the photo on the above poster and the Criterion cover art.

Straw Dogs hits a nerve with me every time, because it taps into masculine insecurities. I haven't been in a fight since middle school, and I always take for granted that laws and government will protect me in extreme situations. Those moments in the film where Dustin Hoffman is unable to be confrontational are uncomfortable to watch. His character, in turn, is not likeable either, and the movie does not have any real protagonists. It's a classic that demands revisits on occasion, though, simply for its unsettling effectiveness.

Are the extras on the Criterion DVD good?
