I think it's hard to argue against that. The only one that I think a valid argument against it could be made for it The Social Network.

My order (Last Year at Marienbad) from amazon has arrived two days ago. I placed the order on April 1st.

After watching The Fog of War two weeks ago (I highly recommend it) and being a big fan of Crumb (more Zwigoff on blu ray would be great), does anyone know other great documentaries, especially from criterion or on blu ray?

From the two Andrei Tarkovsky films released by criterion on blu ray (Solaris and Ivan's Childhood), Which one does everyone prefer?

He only made 7 full feature films in his lifetime. I watched Solaris in college 13 years ago, and was not impressed. I hope Ivan's Childhood is a different film, that I will enjoy. I hope to see a blu ray release of Andrei Rublev in the near future.

The Last Emperor i have never seen
I hope you enjoy them! I have all of his BFI releases and they are wonderful. The past three DVD sets are great as well...Kudos to BFI...they should hopefully be finishing up the rest of his films in the next year or so. There are only 7 or 8 more left to release, so hope springs eternal.

I just finished watching Upstream Color. I know the odds are very, very unlikely, but I would love it if Criterion got their hands on this. Far and away the best thing I've seen all year.

I saw The Fog of War at the theater when it was released years ago. It's an effective documentary, and the "numbers bombing" over Tokyo is a chilling sequence. As far as documentaries go, everyone tells me that I should see For All Mankind, and I agree. It's on my priority list.

On the subject of Andrei Tarkovsky, I believe that Solaris and Ivan's Childhood are both outstanding films, and they both shine on the Criterion Blu-ray releases.

My preferences are for Solaris, because I've revisited that film multiple times over the years, and it challenges me with every subsequent viewing. It's brilliant science fiction, though, and through, because the best science fiction films are the ones that ask the big questions about our present. Solaris asks whether or not we truly know those whom we love, or do we simply know our own projected ideals of those whom we love.

Ivan's Childhood is almost as spectacular, though, and, although it's a bummer of a film, I still find myself going back for more. The sequence of flares shooting in the background over the riverside late in the film looks stunning in high definition.

I want Tarkovsky's Stalker to be released as a Criterion title. Soon. Soon, as in right now.

Well, never-mind, then.

Getting it day one. One of the most absorbing and fascinating films I've seen in a long time.

I personally recommend For All Mankind but that's from someone who loves space program documentaries. Along those same lines, a non-Criterion: When We Left Earth.

That's two for For All Mankind, I had it on my amazon wish list, and been enjoying Brian Eno's (with Daniel Lanois colloboration) film score for years. It is strange I have yet to buy the blu ray. Thank you for recommendations, I will definitely look into the other one.

Philip Glass' film score for Fog of War elevated the film to greatness.

Night and Fog would be my go-to rec. for Criterion documentaries. I can't wait to see Shoah though.

For Tarkovsky, I prefer Solaris, by quite the margin. I've only seen three of his films total, but that is also my favorite overall.

The amazon price for Solaris makes it a tempting buy. Its been 13 years since I saw it, I will give it a second view (I am curious how I will react to the film now). That reminds me of a Samuel Beckett play.

Had I seen Solaris when I was younger, I probably would not have warmed up to it as much. I first saw it when I was in my early 30s, though, and the movie settled into my psyche pretty well.

I hate a lot of space things, but I absolutely LOVED For All Mankind. So informative and interesting.

I found the narrative easy to follow; you just have to pay attention to everything, even though the structure could make it somewhat difficult. It's kind of amazing that it told such an elaborate story through visuals. It almost could have been a silent film.

The interview segment on YouTube from Criterion's Facebook page is 1:47, while the interview on the Criterion disc is 12 minutes. These are taken from the same interview, though.

So I just finished The Game.

I thought it was pretty ridiculous when it was released and when I bought it a few weeks ago (Amazon had it marked down for some reason) I didn't really expect that to change but I was still kind of hoping it would.

It didn't. If anything, it seemed even more ridiculous.

I've always liked Fincher. His films always struck me as fairly standard Hollywood fare that were very well made and there's nothing wrong with that. But I recently rerererewatched Fight Club and rewatched Zodiac and that started to change a little. I still wouldn't use the word great to describe either him or any of his films but I might be inching a little bit more in that direction. His attention to mood and detail go well beyond mere technical excellence and there's something about the way he paces storytelling that I find very appealing.

I don't see a lot of that in The Game though. It just seemed very manipulative and kind of by-the-numbers.

Still, there are worse ways to spend $16.50, I guess.

(Hell, I know there are worse ways to spend $16.50)

Agreed. Fincher's worst by far, not including Alien 3. Dumb and pointless, but with some cool camera work.
