Licensing issues or cost vs. profit are the only reasons I can think of. It isn't as though a 2008 film would need to be re-scanned for HD... |

It's funny how Criterion's monthly lineup never pleases everyone

So I'm just wondering where are those people are who were saying that The Red Shoes was confirmed for June???? I always thought this was a bit off, as all of the "proof" seemed to be 'interpreted' from interviews with somebody interviewed in relation to the restoration, but never from CC. I am just always so amused by where people get their "concrete" information from.
BTW, absolutely love the June releases! (DVD & Blu), but will have to wait for a B&N sale to pick up some of the recent dvds like the Junes, and Dillinger Is Dead, and The Fugitive Kind. |

Talked with my girlfriend today at lunch and we agreed that we simply do not make enough time to watch (art/classic/important, pick the word that offends you least here) films at home and we really should. So we've agreed to do a weekly Criterion Collection viewing. One a week, seems fair, and is far more than what we're currently watching.
Now I'm just trying to decide on what this week's film will be. Definitely something I already own (which isn't a huge list, but is mostly unwatched by us thus far). And I'd like to go with a Blu-Ray, though I'm just not sure yet. I'm leaning towards The Third Man, since I've only ever heard great things about it. If anybody has any suggestions I'm definitely open to ideas in general, especially since I somehow see my Criterion purchasing increasing in the near future. And I will consider any film, I'm not tied to any particular genre or style or whatever have you. I'd rather be open and try something that I end up hating than never go outside of my comfort zone, honestly. |

wings o' desire is a great example. i rented it, if i liked it i would have purchased it. i didn't. that also turned me off of paris, tx cause it's the same director. i dislike avante garde.

![]() You're missing out with Paris, Texas. Not avant garde at all, just a beautiful film. You need to give this a chance. |

The Third Man The Seventh Seal The Wages of Fear Pierrot le fou Last Year at Marienbad The Third Man is easily one of the best Criterion's to begin with, as it's a UK production and stars Americans Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten (both of Citizen Kane fame) as the leads. Next, you could pick The Seventh Seal or The Wages of Fear, the former on its reputation, though the combination of the time period (medieval) and the foreign language may make the uninitiated viewer uneasy, or the latter as it is more contemporary. The other two you have are more "out there" and you may want to see Breathless before Pierrot le fou. Also, I might do some research on Last Year at Marienbad before taking that one in. Just don't go and start with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, as it is much more mainstream than most CC titles. ![]() |

I also was at my Best Buy after work and sitting on a cart mixed in with other DVDs/ BDs were Days of Heaven, Bigger Than Life, Yojimbo/Sanjuro Box Set.
Currently Best Buy has the Yojimbo/Sanjuro Set at 49.99 but it rings up 59.99 sticker price. I decided at risk of having them notice that it wasn't release date yet when price matching to just buy the titles first then just bring back receipt later for the difference. The other releases were 34.99 |

Wow, Best Buy has a decently priced Crterion?! That's a first. Every time I've been there they price their Criterions ridiculously high.

400 Blows is very accessible. Due next week: Yojimbo and Bigger than Life are easy to get into. Wings of Desire is recommended, too. It has some of the most beautiful black and white photography I've seen. Oh and Days of Heaven next week! Some are saying it's a reference quality disc. The 23rd is a great day to be a blu-ray owner ![]() |
