I recommend either Salesman or Harlan County USA. In fact, Harlan is probably one of my all-time favorite movies. Both are tragic. Harlan is a devastating look at life and labor in a mining community in 1970s West Virginia, a truly amazing and powerful movie. Salesman is also a classic, and deals with similar issues of work, class, and postindustrial America.

I wasn't a huge fan of Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven. Visually it was stunning but I felt like if Malick is considered to be a some sort of a Genius, then he wasn't quite fully developed there. I wanted it to be something more.
Tonight was Badlands turn and keeping that in mind I decided to give it a fair chance and approached it with an open mind. And I loved it. Again, visually one of the most stunning films I've ever seen. I also thought the chemistry between Spacek and Sheen was excellent. It's a simple story but so beautiful. A pitch perfect transfer. On the subject of documentaries, I think this Herzog boxset is essential. Every film in it is a little gem. http://www.amazon.com/Werner-Herzog-...zog+encounters |

You can't go wrong with Criterion's release but I just wish they'd release a BD version already. |

Jubal Blu-ray REVIEW
![]() 3:10 to Yuma Blu-ray REVIEW ![]() Obviously, 3:10 to Yuma is a small masterpiece, but Jubal is just as entertaining. Great, and I mean really great, cast here (top performance by Rod Steiger). Anyone on the fence about these releases, do not hesitate to pick them up. Fantastic American films! These are the type of westerns I could watch all day. It was such a great idea to add them to the Criterion Collection ![]() Pro-B Last edited by pro-bassoonist; 04-28-2013 at 12:27 AM. |

![]() [Show spoiler] Thanks for the awesome reviews Pro-B...love that Criterion added more westerns...something me and my father enjoy watching while he's visting me and the wife...just a few weeks they were in town and we sat and watched Stagecoach together and it brought back some memories of time well spent with the old man! ![]() |

You should enjoy these, Preacher
![]() There are very different films, not like Stagecoach, almost like noir films. The lensing in 3:10 to Yuma, in particular, is quite extraordinary. The DVD can't really do the film justice - it is fuzzy and the image basically breaks down. The Blu-ray is stunning. If you have a very large screen, or even better a projector, you are in for a very, very special treat. Tremendous western! Jubal is a more conventional film, but again, it is very carefully lensed. You can immediately tell that Charles Lawton Jr. had a very specific picture in his mind - low-angle shots, interesting use of light/shadow, and then some terrific outdoor shots. I really enjoyed seeing this film on Blu-ray. On DVD this film would have looked average at best. Have a great weekend, Preacher ![]() Pro-B p.s. I forgot to mention, Preacher, though you probably already have it in your collection, but if you don't, take a look at Rio Grande. Great looking film, some outstanding panoramic shots from Utah. ![]() Last edited by pro-bassoonist; 04-28-2013 at 12:29 AM. |

Thanks. I thought the 12-minute segment was a combination of Iggy, Keith Morris, Dick Rude, et al. but after checking the review I see that it's all Iggy.
