That said, I still have not seen Sweet Smell of Success, La Haine, Les Cousins, or Brief Encounter. Soon. Last edited by The Great Owl; 05-02-2013 at 02:52 PM. |

I own all of them too. I should hopefully be able to sit down to watch 12 Angry Men tonight, as part of the discussion thread going on. Haven't had a chance yet due to only getting my TV set up yesterday, and I've been putting other things on for background noise, such as The Muppets and Darjeeling Limited.

After scanning through all the Top 10 Lists on the Criterion page, I must say that I was happy to see The Vanishing listed so many times. That film is just crying and begging to be released on Blu-ray, y'all.
The Vanishing is one of the DVDs from my collection with which I absolutely will not part until I see a superior Blu-ray release. It's one of my all-time favorites. |

What are your Top 10 lists? I'm doing mine strictly from Blu-ray, but feel free to include whatever.
1. The Double Life of Veronique - I can't even describe how wonderful it is. 2. Revanche - One of the best modern films that I've seen. Raw and full of suspense strictly through the characters' body language. 3. 12 Angry Men - The best courtroom drama to date. 4. Lonesome - A short, yet wonderful romantic short film. It can convey a lot of emotions in the viewer without any words. 5. Three Colors Trilogy - Three films dealing with individuals down on their luck and how they are all connected. 6. Antichrist - One of the deepest films I've seen to date. 7. Fish Tank - Not the traditional film about broken homes. 8. Le Cercle Rouge - Excellent film about three individuals who cross paths and the end results. 9. The 400 Blows - A wonderful portrait of a young man without attention and his path toward self destruction. 10. Belle de Jour / Traffic - A tie between a lonely, masochistic woman and a tale about drugs and their influence on the world. Last edited by Scottie; 05-02-2013 at 03:11 PM. |

I wasn't crazy about it on my initial viewing, but I've been having the itch to watch Red Desert lately. Maybe it's just because I can't resist Vitti's beauty in gorgeous color. Think I'll pop it in today.
And god damn, Criterion needs to release more Antonioni. It's insane that they've barely released any of his films on Blu. I want L'Eclisse, dammit! |

So, I finished The Godfather trilogy Blu-ray set yesterday by watching The Godfather: Part III, which I have always considered to be an unfairly maligned film, although it obviously does not stack up to the first two. This got me thinking that we really need a few Sofia Coppola films on the Criterion queue. Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation, to be more exact.
On another amusing non-Criterion side note, I watched the first disc of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring last night, because these three Peter Jackson movies are next up on my list of unwatched Blu-rays to enjoy. I have not revisited this trilogy in almost a decade, and the first thing that struck me was how utterly dated this movie looks right now in 2013. I mean, it's still an awesomely fun movie that holds up, but the computer effects, the overall cinematography, and the general vibe of the movie all just cry out that it's over a decade old. Also, I am finding that I'm unable to watch The Fellowship of the Ring with a straight face anymore, because Facebook memes have ruined the movie for me. "One does not simply..." Argh. Still, it looks pretty awesome on Blu-ray. |
