I bought it during the amazon pricing error a few nights ago...have half-seen it a few years ago, and honestly don't know if I would have wanted it if it cost more.

How did you find out about the pricing error? Why wasn't I clued in?

Was at 3 am here... don't think you were still online, actually , you'd have seen it in the deals banner...that's how I saw it. I don't see such a thing happening again anytime soon, but in case it does, I'll make sure to tell you

(Okay, so that's kinda loose on the standards of "Artistic and historical importance", but you get the point: CGI Is Not A Genre(tm).)
Yeah, that's one movie (so I guess conversation over? . . . thanks for your input ), and besides, the inclusion of Benjamin Button by Criterion was a different, special case than other releases.

And not every vulture is that interested in endless reviews. Didn't these kooky kids start a Criterion of the week discussion thread just for that kind of thing?

It is easy enough to skip over a couple paragraphs worth of "thus", "sublime", "a revelation" etc, but if someone can sum up their feelings about a film in a sentence, then by all means. That has to be as valid as anything else.

Cheers.

It all comes down to the quality of the films themselves. As a curator of cinema in its genres and movements, the Criterion Collection would certainly be justified in including a worthy CGI-heavy film of this recent age as an exemplar - if they could get the rights.
This.

I appreciate discussion, but not everyone finds it fit to submit their opinion to the vultures.
Like many, I'll try to support what I personally feel is a very good film with a reference and a positive statement in terms of the cinematography or the caliber of the acting for example, elements that are less subjective and contentious than others, but I'd never be presumptious enough to attempt a 'review' without some expertise, or at least grounding, in cinema, and also because I have neither that high a regard for my own opinion in all things, nor feel the urge to gratuitously inflict it on others.

I also will not usually comment on a film that I disllike or don't appreciate for the simple reason that, as can be seen clearly throughout these threads, one person's dreck can be someone else's gem and why would I want to, or feel it necessary to, rain on someone's parade? I would though, happily make an exception in this regard for Benjamin Button. Lay on oh vultures and nay-sayers!

Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life has CGI dinosaurs. Woo hoo!

I have never taken a film class or studied cinema to any tangible extent, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

As such, I enjoy writing reviews of movies, and have completed a handful of lengthy write-ups for the User Reviews of various Blu-rays here on this site.

My reviews are generally focused on the actual movie plots or on the creative filmmaker techniques to bring the story to the screen. I leave all of the "digital noise reduction", "edge enhancement", "aliasing", "softness", and "lossless audio" evaluations to the big boys.

Which would explain the use and purpose of the User Reviews option and why it was built into the site?

Pretty much. I like that particular feature on this site. I guess this ties into the argument that has been going on here over the past couple of days, but I personally like the idea of writing a few paragraphs about a movie for a User Review instead of simply writing a one-liner about why I did or did not like the movie.

Returning to Criterion fare...
Now that I am finished watching my three Blu-rays of The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions, I am about to watch Pierrot Le Fou.

Just curious, has anybody done the Forrest Gump/Benjamin Button double feature?

I picked it up at a Blockbuster closeout almost two years ago and still haven't gotten around to watching it.

As much as I love Fincher and Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchette three hours can be pretty daunting sometimes.

Plus I'm apartment dweller so for A-list movies I not only need a three hour window but I want one where I don't need to worry about ambient light or sitting with my thumb on the volume control the whole time.

Someday though.
