I bought the non-Criterion DVD for 5 bucks back when Wally World had their new release bargain summer sale back around when it first came out, and I still haven't watched it yet either. I managed to watch the other blow out DVDs I bought then, such as Revolutionary Road (the book was better, but I definitely enjoyed this Winslet/DiCaprio outing more than Titanic) and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but never got to Benjamin Button. I've read the Fitzgerald short though.

I really didn't get the chance to rewatch it for this. I'm bad, I know. I'm still unpacking (I have a lot of stuff, and I've even tossed a ton of it), and I keep getting distracted by my GameCube. Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door is actually a pretty awesome game, and it's something even non-proficient gamers can enjoy.

On the subject of early 2000s flicks...
As I continue to watch my unwatched Blu-rays, I revisited the first two Extended Editions of The Lord of the Rings series over the past three evenings, and will watch The Return of the King tomorrow.
Good God, these are long movies. They're still so much fun in a popcorn way, but...they are long long long. That's why I only feel a hankering to rewatch them once every five years or so.

As much as I enjoy then, I so do not recommend watching all 3 EE in a row. I did this back in December, when the Hobbit came out, with a bunch of friends, and we did Hobbit meals and all that jazz, but it was so long! We started at 10, and finished at about midnight. Never Again. I'll watch them individually.

It's just that with post-Tenenbaums Wes, the artifice seemed to be the only take away. It was more about satisfying his esoteric whims than creating interesting characters. I can certainly see why people responded to them: as always the art design was pretty fabulous.

I was pleasantly surprised with his last two films, however. Moonrise Kingdom especially was a more than welcome return to form.

Side note: it was really interesting to see Rosenbaum put both Moonrise Kingdom and Turin Horse on his top ten

I can relate. I often watch my movies with a nice pair of headphones. That way I can crank the sound without bothering anybody else. Plus I can usually pick up more audio detail that way.

Oh not defensive at all, if that's what it read's like well again I can only claim I am just a computer geek and not well verse in writting something that might express properly what I may be trying to say. No defense at all since this is the Internet and there is no point to go mad or lose sleep over what might be going on here Some people I truly enjoy reading their post, other post I skip since what they might be saying don't relate to me or what I like. No point in going into a heated debate over films as you won't change my mind, I won't change your mind and we just wasted two or three pages of this forum for no reasons at all.

Now for La Reine Margot my original comment was mostly in relation to Pro-B post about the release and my confusion in first thinking that it was the 1950's movie bieng release which I would buy and finding out it was for the 1994 version which I do not want and said so. I am a little baffle by the fact that some felt my post was inadequate since there was no discussion of the film itself per say, mostly just a release posting and me saying why I would not buy it. Now if the discussion was about the movie itself for a few pages with people giving their opnion and review of said movie I would understand how my one silly post would be out of place and offending to the conversation but this was not the case so I do not understand how it can be offending to others in this particular case? Now again if it is I can only claim I am not fully English and as such may well misunderstand what was going on and if that was so then I apologize for causing such ruckus to the conversation, that was not my intention at all.

Yeah, I keep going back and forth on a decent pair of wireless headphones.

I don't want to pay $50-$100 for an okay pair only to get the upgrade bug but the price premium for that next level is pretty significant.

Terrence Malick's advice to listen to The Thin Red Line very loud is the only true way. Especially with a good AV receiver and a great surround sound. It feels like you are in a middle of the war.

The only true reason why I bought a blu ray player.

There is no better alternative. Same goes with any Vangelis' film scores and Beethoven's 9th and 7th

Even with my Bose headphones and a mini-amplifier, it's apparent that I lose quite a bit when compared to the surround system.

I would NEVER watch that film with headphones. Thin Red Line is a film that I make sure every possible source of light and exterior sound has been eliminated.

I auditioned that over NetFlix back when I still had streaming and didn't get past the shot of the gunboat before deciding I would buy the BD.

I finally got around to watching it for real on July 4th last year.

Lemme tell ya, actual aerial bombs going off outside your apartment really adds a lot to that experience

Most people I know like The Avengers, Transformers, The Dark Knight....typical Hollywood blockbusters. While I enjoy these movies as much as the next guy, talking about the movies we talked about here is just not an option I have in my everyday life. Meeting you guys as fellow fans of Criterion is a real treat for me.

There is no reason to apologize. You are a very polite individual.

Having someone give a negative review on a film is really a courageous thing to do, especially on this thread. I really appreciate a negative review (sometimes more than a positive review). It makes me cautious in buying a film (especially a blind buy).

Someone that continuously gives positive reviews on all films viewed, makes me wonder if they are truly honest or just being extremely polite.

This month I have been watching Russian films, and with my experience, I would not recommend Tarkovsky's Solaris as the first film to watch from his filmography. I would recommend Ivan's Childhood or Andrei Rublev. Due to Solaris, I put him in the back burner for 10 years.

Pat, wasn't trying to put you down. Most of the time I am very appreciative of your input, but that post seemed like a pointless rant. After all, haven't you said in the past how much you dislike how everybody calls everything either "best" or "worst ever"? I was just pointing out an inconsistency.

Anyways, I'm very curious to see Queen Margot and I would still like to hear why you disliked it so much. I'm actually genuinely curious it's been on my "queue" for quite some time. If you have nothing to say on the film, we can just leave it at that and continue on with the Criterion Discussion

I was sold when I heard the water splash from the boat at the beginning. It is identical to real life, it was frighteningly realistic.

This is still my go to movie for an audio demonstration (for disbelievers of the blu ray). You have the right idea, play the movie on the Fourth of July.

What other movies do you recommend with outstanding surround sound?
