Doh! You are right! Forgot about the Criterion versions of existing Universal films. I have most of those, and am holding off on Spartacus waiting for Criterion to release it.

As Roseanne Roseannadanna would say: "Never mind".

I keep thinking about Day of the Jackal having recently watched a couple of films done in a similar style.

Don't lose hope. Keep them ordered and wait it out. Army of Shadows and Last Year at Marienbad shipped out after about 2 weeks or ordering and I too was worried about Le Cercle Rouge since it hadn't shipped out after 3 weeks but a bit over a month mine finally shipped out.

With that being said, what are the chances of Criterion releasing Amores Perros? It sounds like it's the strongest of the Death Trilogy, but I'm not sure what Criterion's relationship with the studio is.
I think the blu-ray quality is very good. Naomi Watts was outstanding in it. I give the film 5 stars even though I'm not entirely sure it benefited from that narrative structure. Sometimes I feel it works, sometimes I feel it would be better linear. Would have been cool to see how it played that way.

I had similar thoughts after I saw 21 Grams at the theater years ago, and I could not understand the purpose of the non-linear storytelling in this particular movie. It seemed to me that the filmmakers were trying too hard. Great casting all around, though.

It keeps you on your toes and making you pay close attention to the characters motivations and all which is cool. But it does still feel kind of random, like was it all calculated what scene would follow the previous one? Did it matter? I don't know, I'm all for unconventional storytelling but I think it could have been just as powerful with a linear structure. Would have to see it play that way to know for sure which way is better. Still a great film though.

For this month's Criterion announcement, I would love to see upgrades to some Max Ophüls films. Preferably The Earrings of Madame de... or La ronde.

And I am still pushing for some Preston Sturges too. Sullivan's Travels being my first choice.

Yes! I've loved every Sturges film I've seen, even some of the 'lesser' ones (though I haven't quite made it to the films from the very end of his career).

Did anyone see the film titled Blow Out? For my opinion, which I watched on blu ray disc few months ago, it’s an intrigued movie with many elements. It included political conspiracy, secrecy, and sound effects.

I thought Mr. John Travola had a brilliant performance for this film. Personally, the story and plot was nearly flawless from starting point to the end, although it was chilling in some parts.

Seemingly, Blow Out extracted from the past, most notably in the 1970s, where wire tapering and surveillance was common by the government and others, but invisible to the general public.

Is there other Criterion Collection films that are similar to Blow Out on blu-ray?

I didn't mind the structure, but thinking back, I guess it would have made more sense to structure it in a linear format.

How long do you think this viewing process will take?

I'm intrigued because I've thought of doing much the same thing. But I think I'd constantly be tempted to go out of order. For example, while I've been watching the Pierre Etaix films, I have The Tree of Life, The Manchurian Candidate, Metropolis (Complete), Metropolis (Moroder), and The Italian Straw Hat pulled from my film shelves and sitting on my media rack, all waiting to be viewed. Something I saw, read, or thought of made me think of those films. I watched The Tree of Life tonight, but I also thought about pulling one or both of my Nosferatus and adding them to my "to watch" pile.
Well I am getting One Hour Photo on Tuesday, so I will be rewatching that then. However, when I get to the Os, I will rewatch another time.

I think it's a great way to go through my collection and get rid of those that I dislike. I'm actually forcing myself to watch films I would often overlook.

The two films most similar to Blow Out are Frances Ford Coppola's The Conversation and Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow Up. It also recalls the 70's Political Thrillers directed by Alan Pakula.

Among Criterion blu-rays, Kurosawa's High and Low uses sound surveillance and reconstruction of sound and visual clues to try to solve a kidnapping and identify the perpetrator. It is a different film from Blow Out, but has similar procedural attention to details to solve a mystery, and a ratcheting up of tension to build suspense in parts of the film.

Since I got my Lord of the Flies fix my new top wish would be the Antonioni Monica Vitti trilogy. Fingers crossed.

Forgot to mention Tokyo Story as my other top upgrade request. I'm watching Late Spring on TCM which reminded me it was the only Ozu on Criterion Blu. Btw-love the bicycle sequence in LS.

Chinatown covers up its 70's paranoia with a 30's setting, and has its share of unsettling suspenseful creeps too.
(I was going to say Lionsgate's release of "The Conversation", but that doesn't have a cool parade chase at the end.)

Fox mentioned they were putting one of the two versions into their MOD Archive titles, but think that might've been the lame 80's Dudley Moore pretender.

Actually, that was Emily Latella.

(So, I tried renting Spartacus from Redbox, and I was getting ready to sit down with some vintage Kirk Douglas from his early Kubrick films--y'know, just for a half hour until Game of Thrones comes on--only the thing wouldn't play...So I pull the disk out, and I try wiping with a Kleenex, only it looks like the last renter had already wiped it with a Kleenex he'd already blown his nose on, and there was this crust of dried snot on the edge! It was sick and disgusting and I thought I was gonna die! It's always something!--How am I supposed to watch Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis fight the Roman Empire, when all I can think about is watching their noses to see if there's any snot there, either? It's like my film-expert cousin, Pauline Roseannadanna, always says, Douglas did his best work for Kubrick in Paths of Glory, but mostly because it was in B/W, and all the WWI scenes were caked in mud and dirt anyway, so if there was any snot on his lapel, you weren't looking at it through the whole movie!)

Big plus one on "Day of the Jackal" oildude~ an exquisitely perfect road-trip/thriller and a wonderful performance by Edward Fox. It's been high on my hope list for a very long time! Perfect Criterion material.
