Agreed. I believe the UK release has only English audio? I own the Nordic release which comes with the original French audio. Fantastic films/docs.

Rosemary's Baby looks awesome on Blu-ray.

I watched this Criterion last night, and I'm happy that one of the best horror films out there is now so much better. I might have to do a write-up this week.

I followed up that movie with my Blu-ray of Wake In Fright...a true horror film of a different sort altogether! Now on to less disturbing territory, because I'm about to watch the Chariots of Fire Blu-ray.

Likewise. As much as I like Zissou, I'd love love love a release of Cousteau/Malle's Silent World. What a treat that would be.

cool, thanks for this link. I wasn't even on the lookout for Silent World - which I also remember from my childhood - until you brought up the theme of Cousteau. This blu looks like a nice package that I'll definitely check out. Thanks again.

No problem, I believe there might be a blu ray set with three movies.

I get misty-eyed every time I see it. No, really!
Might have thought we'd have seen something this year from Paramount on the 60th release-anniversary of Roman Holiday. A nice restoration in 1:67 or so,
[Show spoiler](not to re-ignite the OAR wars but in this instance the Roman vistas and scenes of pageantry might benefit from a wider screen ratio? if the process was done very judiciously?)
if possible, would be lovely to contemplate.

I am a new fan of Wes - the only film I haven't seen of his is The Life Aquatic. I really like the style and cinematography of his films, and the marvellous tableaux he creates with his elaborate staging.

One this that has bothered me slightly - I feel that he has pushed the colour too far on his more recent films - probably starting from Tenebaums, then Darjeeling, and Moonrise Kingdom as well (which I've only seen theatrically). I find the push towards orange/ochre shades to be too much and rather distracting. I guess he's aiming for some sort of nostalgic effect, but to me it doesn't work. I prefer the more natural look of the colour in Rushmore. I think Moonrise Kingdom is the most extreme case of the colours being 'out there'. Does anyone else have this feeling?

I have the feeling he's playing with colour, but I really loved the 70s look of Moonrise Kingdom.

By the way, from the things that you say you like of his, Life Aquatic will probably appeal.

I've never seen those, maybe as a child I don' remember, and I didn't even know they were out, but those look fascinating. I might have to pick them up some time.

I'll look forward to the write up. This post also makes me wonder, What is the best horror film out there anyhow? It might very well be Rosemary's Baby. I've seen all the key genre films and many of the minor ones, but horror is one genre where, for me, I don't have all that much depth of knowledge, or any out-and-out absolutes.

My favorite movie ever is Wizard of Oz, and I've it shelved under horror/gothic, as with Night of the Hunter. But I acknowledge that Wizard can't really be considered for this category.

In terms of a more standard definition, then, I'd throw in there some of the early German Expressionism stuff, maybe the Phantom Carriage . . . Fast-forwarding . . . I love Rosemary's Baby, the Shining, Kwaidan, the Thing (1982), Antichrist, 28 Days Later, of the trilogy I like Dawn of the Dead the best, and I also have a creepy soft spot for Wolf Creek. If White Dog counts as horror then that film is definitely near the top of my list, too.

Yeah, that settles it, upon reflection, White Dog is my favorite horror film (if it counts). Strangely, although I acknowledge its merits and glories, I'm not altogether smitten enough with Night of the Hunter to call it a favorite.

And clearly I'm leaving a lot out - the classic Hollywood screamers, the mid century indie and cult horrors, but, like I said, this isn't a genre that I'm most familiar with. One thing is for sure, Criterion has some great scary movies.

For me it would be Great Expectations. What a film and cast, plus that graveyard scene! Oliver Twist, on the other hand, does have John Howard Davies who I think was a wonderful child actor. Wish Criterion would pick up The Rocking Horse Winner which showcases Davies even more plus excellent performances by John Mills and Valerie Hobson. Great film.

Default Repulsion

I've got two separate shelves, one for horror/gothic, and one for thrillers. Where does my Repulsion criterion belong? Right now I've got it under thrillers.

And I assume my Peeping Tom criterion should sit on the horror shelf, basically alongside Psycho?

I'm pretty particular about categorization, and wanted to toss these queries out there since I always wonder, when I'm looking through my collection, whether Repulsion and Peeping Tom are correctly placed.

(And this isn't even to bring up the whole matter of the classic-period noirs, and the complex ways that they cut across drama, thriller, and crime. . . . are they sleuth or detective flicks, or mysteries, or melodramas, or nail-biters, and so on? Oh, Gilda ).

You are correct, sir. I got them mixed up. I now bow before your superior memory of Gilda Radner SNL characters

I remember wanting it on DVD years back but it was pricey so I settled for a recording off TCM. A Blu-ray with extras would be a dream come true.
