To make a long story short, after several phone calls, I found a B&N store in my state that still had a copy on the shelf. If all goes well, I'll have that one before the weekend is over. I'm more than willing to read a well argued defense of said film, so if you ever decide to post one let me know. I didn't hate the film, but boy did a few elements drive me crazy...ugh

Congrats. I know the feeling. 3 orders for Mafioso fell through for me, including one that was mailed out almost a month ago and never arrived. I finally found a copy last week when I was at a BN locally.

I didn't think I had to write up a defense of my opinion, and I'm inclined not to because I don't feel the need. It was mildly degrading to be compared with people described as "sad". We can talk about our reads on film all day long (as we do) but don't make it personal, that devalues not only your position but the discussion in general.

I just started collecting blu-rays and I want check this collection out. I just recently started to like pre-80's movies and I wanted to know where I should start with this collection. I would like a movie that is visually stunning and something that has that cool feel to it. By visually stunning I don't mean special effects, just nice lighting, nice contast, and cool cinematography.

On a separate note, I am new to collecting blu ray movies. Since I am new to this, I have been getting a lot of movies that I like in the range of $5 to $9. I know that these movies are much more expensive but what is the general trend of the prices of these movies? Meaning are they steadily dropping the longer they are out? I may hold out if eventually these movies come down to $10 or so.

Sorry for the long post and sorry if this was already covered on a earlier post.
My first two Criterion blu-rays were Stagecoach and Modern Times, which I still think are two of their most exemplary releases. Great looking, essential films with a wealth of wonderful extras. Highly recommended. If you're looking for something a little more show off-y visually speaking, you can't go wrong with any of the Powell/Pressburger films, and I also really love the Blow Out disc - great great movie and looks phenomenal.

I think you'll have a heck of a time finding any Criterion blu-ray for ten bucks. The aftermarket for in-print non-new releases generally tends to settle pretty solidly at around 15-20 bucks. You can catch a steal every now and then if you keep your eyes open maybe. If you live in the Southeast, there's a chain of stores called MovieStop which regularly gets in used Criterion dvd and blu at absolute steal prices.

I wasnt making it personal, have I ever made a personal attack on you? Both Coop's friends and you used the word "creative" to describe the film, I was just pointing that out. I just thought it was odd that you used the same adjective.

I added the bit about writing a defense, because I'm always game to try to look at things in a new light. So if you ever try to mount a defense, I will be the first one to read it

Definitely. $20 for a Criterion outside of B&N's July and November sales is a definite steal.

I just want to point out that I didn't mean them liking the film was 'sad', but their lack of knowledge about any film that this film took from was sad.

Ignorance to film history = sad, different opinions = just different opinions

My advice to short Martin is just to get HULU and just stream the films in the Criterion Collection before he buys.

TCM is also another great resource.

I was in line one day recently at the grocery store, and alongside other magazines was one by Andrew Weil, on healthy living and eating. It looked interesting so I grabbed it - and then realized it was $29.99 . . . not a book, a magazine. Needless to say, that went right back on the rack.

His Top 10 list is pretty neat. No doubt, charging those kinds of prices, he must have a sweet BD collection and home entertainment system. And cars and boats and a harem and a basketball court. All part of healthy, holistic living, I guess.

Your advice to me to get Hulu . . . or in response to my recommendation to the poster that he buy Badlands?

But, yeah, I'd agree with you . . . he should just get Hulu and go from there.

Agreed. I am going to buy one release that was recommended that is on the cheaper side ($20 or so) and see how I feel about it these releases. At the same time I will use my netflix and amazon account to view some others. If I enjoy these films as much as others do on this thread, then I am going to be a poor man

Thanks for the advice everyone. I really enjoy this website and these forums.

Why would you find it odd that two people would use the word 'creative' in a thread devoted to film discussion. And why would you feel the need to point that out?

I believe that you did just make a personal attack on the poster by implying by your phrasing that he or she might not possess the wherewithal to mount a defence. And why exactly would she feel the need to 'defend' her opinions to you or anyone else? Your thumbs up incidentally does not reflect in any sense the tenor of your posting.

It was not an attack. I encourage people to voice their opinions. In fact there have been a number of great pieces of criticism (both by critics and non-critics alike)that have made me want to reassess a film and eventually help me see it in a new light. I say I would be the first to read it because I know Snicket has the smarts to do so.

If someone doesn't choose to write said piece, it doesn't make their opinion any less valid.

No surprise there given that Body & Soul was written by Abraham Polonsky, who also co-wrote and directed Force of Evil. Both are great.
